Big Wade and I took his son Gavin and my daughter Lizzy down to Proscott on Sunday for opening weekend. We made the slow crawl up to one of our spots on the Croix. No wake is in effect because of the high water and man is it high. The Mississippi is flowing very fast and the Croix is flow fast as well. Got up to our spot and marked fish in 10-30 feet of water and setup to fish. We trolled around for a while with jigs and lindy rigs to no avail so we headed back down to pool three.
We were very limited on the time we had to fish since both kids had something going on. We pulled up to a spot on pool three and chatted with River Dan for a while. The kids enjoy him as well as picking on him. I think he really enjoys that too. We setup up jigging with plastics and minnows. It was turning much into the same as up the Croix. Bites here and there but not much for commitment. But the kids were in the boat and enjoying the time.
Saw Dan pull in one or two and then Wade hooked a fish. Dan yelled to let the kid have it so he passed the rod to his pull who pulled in his first Sauger of the season. Big smiles and it made his day.
This was also the first fish Wade’s caught on plastic. I’ve been bragging them up to him for a few years now but until you are comfortable with them yourself, it’s hard to switch over. With the putting up and and down the current and dealing with the kiddos we only had about an hour and a half of fishing time. It was enough to get the boat out, make sure it works well and get the kids to wet a line. More fish would have been nice but with the water high and cold they weren’t chomping for sure.
