While “pleasure” boating with the wife the other day, I spotted a likely eddie in the shoreline close to Afton. Plenty of currant, deep water and some wood…upstream of it. Figured I’d give her a try some night.
Commancharo, left for the northern Croix already…so I thought I’d make it a short night with my 4 suckers and give this spot a go.
Got the first line in…with my well know accuracy casting…placed it in 2 to 6 foot of water…just past the currant seam. Went to get the other rod and the ol’ clicker sounded like one steady tone! Cranked it in gear and hauled back…..Nothing! I composed myself and after the goose bumps went away…got the second line going and then rebaited the first rod…
Of course I have to throw one sucker too hard everytime I go out and today was no exception…down to two suckers….
I didn’t wait very long and I heard the tell tail noise of a rod thwacking in a rod holder from the back of the boat…which was odd since I set the clicker….Yup, forgot to release the spool….
Less than 15 minutes later…another run…felt him running with the rod in my hand…hauled back and and and Nothing….10:15 and out of bait…guess it was going to be an early night after all…
So, I was happy that I found a place on the Croix with some action. But the question in my mind tonight is Were they just small flats? Although this is muskie water…I think if these runs would have been from a muskie the bait would still have been on the 10/0 gama hooks.
Does this pattern sound framiliar to anyone? Guess I’ll just have to make sure I have more bait ….next time!
