07/13/04 Lower St. Croix walleye bite is fair with good flashes of activity followed by a lull in the action usually associated with sweltering heat and low wind. Walleyes are being caught and the size is good with 18- 20 inch fish coming in as well as a mix of smaller and to anglers delight larger as well not huge but in the 5 pound range. Again livebait and trolling is working. For livebait leeches and crawlers are good with single hook livebait rigs working well. Anglers trolling crankbait and spinners are also catching ol’ marble eyes with silver lures working. Saugers have slowed a bit but are still mixed in with the walleyes. Smallmouth are biting well in less than ten feet near rock, and hitting plastic worms and Senko’s using offset hooks as well as nightcrawlers. The river has a nice little water raise of about a foot and a half that should stay for about five days and the river level is on a slow rise. White bass have been fairly absent and the sheepheads are not on a tear – darn! Channel catfish are also a bit slow, and not much flathead catfishing is being reported. River elevation above sea level in Stillwater, Minnesota is 675.65 and water temperature is 76 degrees, clarity is poor due to algae blooms.
