Just a friendly reminder that this is if not the most, one of the most dangerous weekends not only for traveling but for boating.

It was this Friday before the 4th that we lost some boaters in the past…I don’t want to see another anouncement about an IDA leaving us early.

It’s not enough to be safe…you have to watch out for that other guy! Might be a good day to wear the old PDF and see if it fits?!

Sorry for the preaching… but it is the St Croix!

Wasn’t that accident last year where one boat was following anouther. The first boat in line slowed up and the second ran them over. This is a situation that I never had given much thought to until last year.

Not sure if you’re thinking about the night time boat collision that killed everyone involved…. and I thought it was 7 total….. 5 in the speedboat and two in the other. I could be wrong… but if this is the one you’re thinking of, it was more like 3-4 years ago already. We’ve been losing people on an annual basis for awhile now though……. it’d be nice to see that stopped.

I can say that cruiser traffic today was lower than I’d expected. There might be enough people getting wary of the Croix and opting for other plans. I see the Hudson no-wake bay is packed already though!

That was the one kid. It seems like it was last year…

I was out until 1 p.m. last night. Watched a pleasure craft run into the red can on the north side of the kinni. If they had a light along…they didn’t use it. I used my light to show them where the no – wake cans were. They may have had a reason, but I thought it was odd to be out on the river at night without some type of light.

That wasn’t you was it Still?

As I was heading back to Afton, using my GPS and light, I was thinking that 18 mph was pretty fast for night boating. I know there’s a group trying to set a speed limit at night to 25…so I gave it a little more throttle (it was really calm last night and no boats around…that I could see) and upped her to 25. I run a 17 foot boat…and in my opinion 25 mph at night is too fast. Even at 18 I wouldn’t be able to see a log or anything else and stop in time…much less 25 mph.

Well as I was running at 25 mph, I heard a funny noise and looked to the right..there was a (about) 35 foot pleasure craft zipping past me. He was a good guy…’cause he trusted me… He trusted me not to make a right turn. Not that he was THAT close to me, but close enough that if I would have turned 100 FEET to the right, he would have had to take action to avoid hitting me. But then, I’m sure he could stop his boat much faster than mine….

I know, you’re saying what the sam hill are you doing out there on the 4th weekend and at night too? Good question!
