Cold Front

I am heading out on the Croix after work today. Plan on pulling some crawlers around the Kini area. I have a question regarding the cold front that blew in last night. In your experiences, does the fishing generally slow down for a day or two?

    Thanks,

I had one fella tell me that he’s never seen a body of water effected by cold fronts as bad as the Croix….on the other hand, I’ve had some very good fishing after a front….

In short…I don’t know! But let us know tonight when you get back!

I decided to skip fishing last night, spent time working around the house. I did see a few boats out around the Hudson area. Bradi, any luck?

Pulled Lindy rigs around last night, not one fish. I fished the areas that have been producing for me the last week. Decided to switch it up a bit and pulled raps on the flats behind kinni. Caught 2 eater walleyes and one big cat. The cat hit a dt16 in the craw color. I thought I snagged a tree, after playing that fish for 20 minutes, arose this big cat, had the rap inhaled to where I couldn’t see it. Since I was by myself, and she wouldn’t fit in the net, and there wasn’t anyone else around to take a picture, all I have left is the memory. Man that was fun, lost a $5 rap, but it was worth it.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the fish will turn back on.
I’ll be back on the water Sunday morning..

I got out on the water on Wednesday night right after the front blew through. I was targeting muskies and thought the front might put the fish off. I was right. I didn’t see a fish. I fished the same areas I fished on Sunday where I had some very good action. I talked to a couple of other guys who were fishing for ski’s also. They said they boated one right after it quit raining and had another nice follow, but then they didn’t see a fish the rest of the night.

This seems to follow what I have seen in the past. Fishing is great right up until the wind changes direction after the front blows through, then nothing. Unfortunatly I don’t get out on a consistent enough basis to get a feel for how long after a front blows through that the fishing will be slow. I think thats a good question for Turk.

One other note. If you see a warm day where the front just kind of hangs around and rains on and off all day long – look for me out there. The fishing can be pretty good and best of all, it keeps the goons in the power boats off the river. But thats another story.

I spent an hour an a half dragging a crawler around the point North of the Kinni…I am now the self proclaimed “Rock Bass King” Moved deeper…rock bass…moved shallower….rock bass.

Notice a few more mayflys out, but the trees weren’t covered yet…

The water was 35 degress wamer than the air….

Sandbar, I thought you quit fishing since I had not seen a post from you in a while. I was looking for some help to see if I should head down to red wing or try the st croix tomorrow. Hopefully the water is dropping a bit, I’m not having great luck since the water came up.

Well – I just got back into town from a vacation up north at Cass Lake where that same cold front crippled my day and even night bite! Where at night we where getting 24, 25, and 26″ fish! Then the front hit…

From what I’ve seen a serious front will effect the river especially when the water is dropping — though a front on a rising river with high water doesn’t shut them down the same. The next day after a front goes through can be bad fishing but it normally doesn’t last more than a day or two.

Now combine a front with a fast dropping river and the fish flat out move. Also good structure can be the worst place to fish after a front.

    Keep catchin’

A similar thing happen to me when I first starting fishing th St. Croix again, about 2 summers ago. I was trolling a crankbait, at first thought I had a snag, then realized it was not, had my fishing partner start to get upset that it was taking so long to get the fish in, and finally ended up with a hugh flathead catfish in the boat. The biggish fish I ever caught to-date and no camera! I let it go and now I don’t go fishing without my camera. Thanks for bring back the memory ritt14

The 26th was also slow for my boat. 3 smallies and a nice pike was all we could muster after 6 hrs. I went to spots that I KNEW held bass and was hard pressed to get a hook into much. More rain today although it doesn’t appear that it will change water levels.

    Hey FTA,
I have not been fishing as much the past three weeks. My 12 year old son has fallen in love with golf….a good thing!! So, I have been getting my fair share of par 3 golf courses lately. I did sleep in on Saturday morning (June 26th) and launched at the Bluffs around 8:15 am. Fished the normal spots around the Kinni. Lost a nice fish early, and didn’t boat a keeper until 11:00 am. Ended up with four legals from 15+ to 17 inches. Caught a few smallies, some short Walleye, and a sheepie. The legals came from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm.

Briank, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Golfers are right below those god-awful, hideous, wretched, %#^!(#@@! green carp fisherman on my list…. I revert back to my previous disclaimer from another post.

    Sandbar…
Sorry to hear of the family crisis you are going thru!! The main thing to do in times like these are to stay focused. As you said, he is only 12. He can be saved. If you stay the course, he can be pulled back from the dark side.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

(Maybe a new St. Croix or a Fennwick under the pillow will help.)

Holy smokes!!! I didn’t know a guy would get pounded so badly mentioning the word “golf” on this board. Brian, Greg, and Bradi….did you guys try the game and end up making your clubs fly like a helicopter? I have been playing for around 29 years. I used to play a couple times a week, now it’s fishing that gets most of my free time. Well…..you guys take care, and don’t watch too much golf on TV this weekend!!

P.S. Played the par 3 at Cimarron again last night..

    Sandbar,

I say you should have started him a long time ago. A professional fisherman makes what 50,000 to 100,000 a year at best. A pro golfer makes 5-10 million a year. Who’s in the wrong sport. I think when I have kids I will have them learn to golf so they become professionals and support me so I can retire early. Who wouldn’t like to retire early and fish more often. Get your son golfing as soon as possible and hire an instructor, it might pay off later on.

Also, I should have came up to the kinni saturday instead of staying in prescott. Thanks for the report.

    Back to the cold front…
I was out Wed morning and (I think I posted this somewhere) that I couldn’t keep the bass off…they were chewing up all my worms! So, today my wife wanted to go fishing. She doesn’t care what kind of fish she catches…. So I went to the same spot….not one fish in 2 hours… i was amazed!

I should be out of Friday…I think I’ll be going through the Kinni at some point might even try prescot.
Hope to see ya all out there!
