Been a number of years since Ive hit the croix in the fall looking for walleyes and crappies. Today was a great day to visit some old memories over there. Was a little surprised to find the water levels up from earlier this summer. This ment getting over the sand bars wasnt going to be to bad but on the other hand someone was getting there feet wet loading and unloading the boat.

Didnt take to long to find fish. 1st hole we stopped at produced fish vertical jigging fat heads, hair jigs and Moxies. Bass, northern and small walleyes. Typical for a deeper hole in a small river this time of year.

Next spot was a out side bend in the river with current and logs. BfishN dragging jigs and plastics where the plan in this spot due to the heavy wood. No way was a regular jig going to have a chance to make it back to the boat in all that wood. Water depths where only 3 to 5′ but it didnt matter. Those walleyes have no problem hanging in that shallow water as long as there is current, cover and food. This was also a nice spot soak some jigs on the bottom for suckers to. We didnt find a lot of suckers. Missed most of them but watching another boat right down river from us as they always had one or more on.

Next stop was fishing some deeper water again at the cliffs looking for crappies. Here again it didnt take long to connect vertical jigging fat heads and trimmed up Moxies. Nice mix of white and black crappies. Seemed to be plenty of rock bass mixed in with them to. Drifting down river of this hole managed to pick up one more keeper walleye and it shallowed up.

Great to be back on the croix in the fall and hooking into some fish over there again. Even managed to clean up my 1st meal of walleyes for the year. Dont get to many of them fishing pool 2 all the time. Sure hope I can get in another trip or two before things freeze up.

Nice report…Always fun to fish smaller rivers. I would like to get up to the upper Miss. for some great smallmouth fishing before the season winds down.

We only managed one small mouth today. 20′ deep in the bottom of a hole. Maybe we would of had better luck on them with some sucker minnows.

Tried the upper croix again last Sunday. Didnt take long to find active walleyes in the holes. Vertical jigging hair, plastics or minnows took fish. Water levels where up another 6″s or so since my last trip over. Made for easy travel on this shallow stretch of river.

Went looking for walleyes in the corner logs again with out even a bump from one. Suckers where still stacked in these spots and ready to hit a crawlers on the bottom.

Finished our trip looking for eyes and walleyes around rock island. Again didnt take to long to find active biters. Jig and minnow took most of our fish here.
