I’ve been skunked my last three cat outings on the St Croix but last night made up for all the bad nights. Weather was beautiful, 61 degrees, clear skies, wind calm, water temperature was 69 degrees. Water elevation was 681.8, still almost 7 feet high but there is a nice current through the backwaters. Lots of forage fish activity last night – watched a school of white bass for about an hour busting baitfish on the surface. Caught ten channel cats from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, all between 21″ and 24″ on cut sucker. They looked like they all came out of the same litter. Fished one rod with a live bullhead and one rod with cut sucker. Caught everything on the cutbait rod. At 9:00 changed over and fished two bullhead rods hoping for a flathead but no luck. It was a picture perfect evening, the stuff you dream about in February.

That darn beaver found me again last night – he wants everybody to go home at dark. He cut a tree down upstream of me that crashed into the river. At about 10:30 he kept swimming around splashing his tail on the water. Damn thing is a terrorist.

Yeah I had one of those days saturday night, it was perfect on the water, and the fish didn’t stop. I can’t believe how perfect the night was. Mights like these make a good skunkin’ well worth it.

Nice pic Steve! I wish I would have had half your luck last night. I was looking for a flathead bite around the 94 bridge which didn’t happen.

Hey redundancey is good in night fishing equipment…with beavers… a second pair of pants maybe in order!
