St Croix Cat Bite

In the last week the flatheads have shown up as the river moves back within its banks. My last 3 nights out I’ve had good luck with medium size flatheads and they are hitting live and cut bait. Water level today is 679.4 feet and dropping close to a 1/2 foot a day. Water is clear and the flow is slow to moderate. Water temp is 79 degrees. We have had a nice string of good cat weather (Clear, Calm and Warm). I’m taking tonight off since the wind is howling today but I’ll be back at them once the wind dies down.

I was fishing the backwaters due to the high water and there is a lot of bait activity just about everywhere on the river and the cats are in that mix. My most consistent bite is kind of late in the 2300 time range + or – a little bit. The bite usually starts about the same time the Twins implode and I usually catch fish right about the time the games end.

With this water temp they should be just about ready to spawn which will slow the bite again. The fish I’ve caught this week haven’t shown any spawning bruises but it can’t be far off.

Turk – might be time for you to hook some cut bait on your clients hooks like last year. You were putting some nice channel cats in the boat. Good Luck!!

    Thanks for the update Steve.

Wind howling? I just looked at Weatherunderground and it says there isn’t any wind in Red Wing as I’m looking at white caps out my window. LOL!

Time to get the boat ready…enjoy your night off!
