When was the last time you saw a barge go up the ST. Croix? One went up today

    Was it creating a wake?

Saw 3 of them tied side by side going up the Croix a few weeks ago. I think they are going to work on the new bridge. We were wondering if they would need to untie from each other to allow getting through the RR bridge in Hudson.

The tow boat was from Minneapolis and yes it was making a wake.

Wouldn’t the Kinni be more of a hinderance?

I think the piers on the RR bridge get narrower than the kinni channnel.

Back in the 70’s Excel Energy would barge the coal up to the King Plant and the barge traffic was a regular occurence. There were always barges tied off on the large circular tiedowns and we would watch them run the barges through the big scoop that unloaded the coal. I cannot remember when they switched to railroad cars, I guess it was cheaper to bring it in on the railroad than using barges. From what I understand the circular tiedowns and the coal scoop will be removed as part of the new bridge construction. Part of the effort to return the river to its original condition.
