Oh boy. Slooooow. The nice thing is there wasnt much boat traffic. I have never seen so few boats on opener before. Didnt catch our first fish until 1:30. Ended up with 3. Heating up the grease now! Croix water temp 46-48.
    It can only get better.

How was the debris down river? Upriver it was almost pointless to pull cranks. We had 42.5 water temp all day.

I can’t give a Croix report right now, I’ve always been told it’s rude to type with a mouth full of fresh Walleye, and I hate to be rude. I’ll be out early again tomorrow.

out of all the guys both in shore and out in boats, I only saw two fish TOTAL caught after work from 330 til now. only one was even an eye.

atleast I got to handle over 120 walleye before I hit the croix, that made the day better.

Osceola was slow for us today. Trolling was pretty much shut down in the main channel due to leaves and grass. Seen a few fish caught but not much. Only had on hit our selves for the afternoon.

Will be back at it tomorrow. Weather was great this afternoon.

Launched out of Prescott 10AM and surprisingly there was plenty of parking. It felt really good to be back on the St. Croix. The fishing wasn’t great but we managed to pick up several, mostly Walleye with a few small Sauger. Fished several spots from Prescott to the Kini and only found fish at Prescott and below the Kini.

We started out at Prescott and picked up a nice Walleye. Soon after that we had to vacate that spot because the commercial fishermen dragged their net across the entire area we had been fishing. A large crowd showed up at the beach when the commercial fisherman got to shore. It would have been fun to see their catch but I was having too much fun trying to catch fish for myself.

Slow was the word from most! Hudson channel cleared out pretty quick. Marked a fair amount of fish in various areas in the bayport area but not enough takers to confirm species. Ended with 1 whitebass, a mudpuppy, a short eye, and a slimy fishing rod. Be out again in the morning with a different game plan! Guess I should have pryed for a tip or two on high, cool water at the GTG!

Going out in the morning. I went out around 3 but my depth finders decided not to read depth and after messing with them for a bit I headed in. The fix was to take my plug block apart and put it back together and it works now

No offense personally, but it’s kinda sad that you go through the trouble to get to the river and lunch your boat, and then once on the water, you got to home because you can’t fish without a depth finder?…

Just be glad your not the poor guy who launched his truck and trailer 60 feet off shore this morning at the dnr launch. His truck was so far in that my buddy launched his 620 over the cab. Not a good start to the fishing season, man I feel bad for the guy.

Slow for us today. We got a 20″ a 16″ and short walleye fished from 6am to 1pm.

Good fishing is right around the corner!

made it out today after all for a little bit of dragging cranks on leadcore. trolling only got us a short and a dink white bass before we headed upriver. counted 10 boats jammed around the railroad bridge when we went pass, but only saw one small white bass caught there by those boats. further up river my boat host managed to pick up a short off a jig and minnow and lost something big off of his blade bait. water was a crispy 45-46F in most places, and to top it off I was shown a launch thats cheaper than hudson. cant wait to get out there again.

Today was a better day. Headed up river and at least caught some walleyes. 8 of them came to the boat from 7:30 to 1:30, but none of them hit the 15 inch mark. Seemed to prefer minnows over anything else we tried. Weather was perfect! Now if only the water was 53-54 instead of 43-44 and the water was closer to normal levels. The fish definitely weren’t in their normal spots or bite mood! The old Croix threw yet another curve ball at us! Next weekend sounds like it will be the ticket! Dropping water and warmer temps!

When we motored past the Bluffs on Saturday there were several rigs in the parking lot but it did not appear to be very full. The Bluffs would probably be a better choice than Prescott for launching in the high water because the ramp in Prescott gets fairly flat so you need to back your vehicle in a long ways to get your trailer wet.

Thanks Dale . How would it be for an 18.5 boat with low water levels ?

You should be fine, just plan for the possibility of getting your feet wet. There were other 18′ boats and they all managed. What I usually do at Prescott during high water is back the trailer in close to the dock so I can just step from the dock to the trailer to get it hooked. I have a roller trailer that does not work for any type power loading so I have to crank it on. Not sure how well it would work with a bunk trailer (it’s been a long time since I had bunks) but should be manageable.

Bunks work just fine at the bluffs. If alone you will want to back close to the dock so you can jump in the boat. Be careful when leaving remember they have a rock break wall so do not drive straight out.
