walleye bite

Fishing has been pretty decent on the croix the last 3 weekends for walleyes. Had a strange bite yesterday. Fished from 6:15 to 1:15 by the kinni narrows. Caught 10 walleyes. 5 shorts and 5 legals, one 19″ and a fat 23″ fish. The weird part is in the first hour I caught 4 walleyes with one being the 19″ fish. Then for the next 3 hours all I caught were shorts and fishing slowed way down. I kept fishing and about 11:30 or so fishing picked up again. Caught a 16.5 fish and ran out of leeches missing a few more fish. I tried fatheads after running out of leeches and caught the 23″ fish. The bite seemed to slow down again after that. Anybody else notice that fish bite odd like that in the middle of the day when fishing the St. Croix, rather than just a steady bite all morning. Also, wondering if a larger bait might produce some of the bigger fish? The 23″ fish spit out a 4″ shad. Maybe trying some shiners or a jumbo leech might turn some bigger fish?

All I can catch on the croix near kinni is some sheephead. With the bonus walleye and bass.

That sounds about right for that area. You can get your fish if you put in the time. Sanbar has an interesting story along these lines from Saturday. I’ll let him tell it when he see’s this message.

    Sat morning in the kinni…
We picked up 2 nice ones on leeches. Both came north of the kinni. (18″ and 20″). We also caught a 17″ small mouth while trolling our way thru the narrows. (We were 1st at the landing and second to go thru the narrows.)
We headed down and tried a few spots on the way back. Nothing, none on the graph either. Pulled out at 10:00am. Wife was happy.

    and by the way…
Who was it that passed me on the way to the Kinni? I have the feeling it was either Suzuki or Sandbar…am I right?

Bradi – Might have been me. I fished the Kinni from 7:45 until 12:30. You in the cammo boat with two guys?

Fish Them All – You had a great day. I found two shad in my livewell when I got home. It was nice meeting you, I was the one fishing alone with the Viking hat and sweatshirt.

I had an interesting morning. From 7:45-10:45, all I caught was a six inch smallie. From 10:45-12:30 things went nuts, I picked up my 6 legals, all 15-17 inches. It was one of the best bites I have experienced.

sandbar~ yup, me in the camo. Are you going to try and brave it this weekend? I’m thinking I’m out of comission for a while.

    Bradi,
I will be out Saturday or Sunday. It sounds like rain for both days.

Sandbar or anyone else. Are they still biting today or did you just get soaked. Planning on going out monday morning. Hopefully its raining so all the pleasure boats stay in. Good luck and keep on fishing!

    Fish Them All,
Fished Friday from 11:30-5:00, only managed one keeper, released. The weather was great. Went out Saturday 7:30-3:00, put 3 legals in the boat. The weather was terrible, the rain was pretty constant the entire time out. Besides getting completely soaked, I snapped my favorite Walleye rod on a snag.

I hate it when that happens! At least it could have been a fish!
