Big fish! $100 says she wasn’t fishing for catfish, though.
I would like to know what tackle she was using.
February 15, 2013 at 4:06 pm #1142239RUMOR has it they used a saw to cut a hole to get it out.
Who carries a saw out ice fishing, besides someone that’s spearing.
Assuming always sucks for me.
The good thing is that we know there’s a state record fish out there. What’s even better is that the St Croix’s sturgeon population is rebounding…
And even better is that State Record fish will have to be caught in a 30 day period in Sept by a person that bought a sturgeon tag for it to be killed for the State record tag.
We can hope it’s caught in WI where it doesn’t have to be killed to make it a record fish.

That little kid in the picture is awesome.
ha, just went back and looked at it. PRICELESS.
February 19, 2013 at 7:39 pm #1143622I don’t know about any rumors, but all I have to say is that when I caught my big sturgeon, my 9″ hole was only half the size of the fish’s head…Add that 18+ inches of ice and it’s next to impossible to turn the head of such a huge fish up. I would’ve had to pre-cut a huge hole just to catch sturgeons…just saying.

BK,
Old buddy please elaborate…Not sure what you mean here to qualify for the MN or WI record…
February 19, 2013 at 11:37 pm #1143712I was just able to squeak My big one 59″ just through an 8″ hole last year. That big boy nope but conceivably a 10″ may be possible.
I did have help with a make shift gaff made out of an old pole and a number 5 hook to turn the nose into the hole and barely lift it up enough to squirt it out the hole.Congrats to the young gal and her family in catching a most beautiful fish.
Awesome picture and the youngster is just precious. I can see besides being heavy I’m sure she was still shaking and exhausted from hauling that monster sitting in the chair was a great choice and great to be fitted into a frame for the wall..February 20, 2013 at 3:44 pm #1143936Quote:

Which part Turk?
In MN a State record must be killed and turned over to the MN DNR. In WI, it does not. I believe there needs to be three witnesses at the scales. I would need to recheck those regs first.
If a person catches a state record fish, in the harvest season of Sept, the person would need to have the sturgeon harvest tag in their possession to claim it as a state record. If not, it would need to be immediately released after ID measurements and photo.
No record for catch and released fish.
That help?
February 20, 2013 at 6:48 pm #1144040I’m still curious how that fish was landed unintentionally.
I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt but I sure hate it when people brag about illegally caught fish.February 21, 2013 at 10:05 pm #1144499Mike,
What am I missing about the story? I understand it would be illegal to target sturgeon out of season. Are you saying that once you hook one, it is illegal to intentionally land it? Do you know more about the story than is in the paper?February 22, 2013 at 1:06 pm #1144724Quote:

As others have mentioned, how do you land such a fish without preparation? I cant get past the hole issue. BUT I said I give her the benefit of the doubt so I am not harping on her.
February 22, 2013 at 1:49 pm #1144744I can understand them being prepared if they were targeting catfish (open all year). I don’t know anyone that ice fishes specifically for catfish though. It also doesn’t seem like you hear of many big cats caught ice fishing. It is still a really nice fish.
February 22, 2013 at 3:12 pm #1144775As mentioned before, there isn’t a law covering the type of gear used or the size of hole that’s cut in the ice.
Cut a 2 foot by 3 foot hole and use summer time cat gear and your golden. Of course I’m not saying that’s what these people were doing. I wasn’t there.
February 22, 2013 at 9:41 pm #1144897I ice fish for catfish on the St.Croix and you have to use basically the same tactics for crappie fishing. The bites are very light and will be up there in the 20′-25′ water column most of the time. I will also say that getting a bite from a 5’+ sturgeon is no different than getting a crappie school overlapped on your lure. After catching so many sturgeons that way, I’d rather no longer tangle with them since I’m trying to catch crappies and catfish. I’d rather spend the next 5-10 minutes fighting a 30″+ channel cat than spend the next hour+ tug of war with a monster sturgeon running 40+ yards of line out. Yeah, it was fun the first few times, but in the end I really have no fish to show for. I’d rather have a catfish fry.
