Muskies on the Croix

I’ve been at the musky game for about 6 years now and have fished the Croix a handful of times. The first time I fished it, I lost a 40-42 at the boat. Since then, I’ve fished it 5 trips and have come short of even a follow. My home waters are White Bear and Bald Eagle, fishing the river is a curve ball for me. Not just talking about the Croix, but does anyone have advice on fishing stained slow moving rivers?

The Croix was a tough bite this year. Don’t take it personally. I know lots of guys that fish the river and I don’t know any of them (including myself) that did much bragging this year about action on the Croix.

I saw numerous 40″+ muskies and even a few in the 50″ class range tight to the shoreline back during the high water period before the water level dropped back to normal. It was a common sight during the morning shore fishing to watch 6 or more crappie shoot out of the water three feet high with a muskie right behind them. I know a few fishermen that lost their catch to an ambush when reeling in over structure as well. Once it got hot though the constant action dissipated to nothing.

Any idea as to what structure muskies tend to relate to in the river? Rip rap and sand?
