This is from this morning’s Pioneer Press. Looks like a good opportunity for St. Croix anglers to get an update on the asbestos dumping at Lakeland Beach on the St. Croix. If anyone ever witnessed any dumping of construction materials in the vicinity of Lakeland Beach in the past several years, I’m sure the authorities would like to hear from them.
LAKELAND: City to discuss beach asbestos
City and county officials will meet with Lakeland residents at
6:30 p.m. tonight at Lakeland City Hall to discuss the asbestos
situation at Lakeland Beach.
“I’m expecting that from this meeting, we’ll have a better sense
of what the community can expect this spring relative to the
remediation or cleanup, as well as to assess the probability
that we will be able to reopen as a beach this summer,” said
Mayor Craig Morris.
Morris said he was “pessimistic” when asked whether the city
would open the beach this summer. “I need to have assurance that
we’re not going to find more of this stuff moving forward,” he
said.
Morris said he would ask officials to address how the city
can “protect the health and welfare of the people who might use
the beach … and the people that are living next to the beach.”
He also wants to know to what extent people who might have used
the beach in the past two or three years were exposed to
asbestos.
“I want definite answers to those three issues,” he said.
