White bass action anywhere?

I like to get in on the white (silver) bass action when they school up, corral the shad and go into a feeding frenzy, but I haven’t seen it happening yet this fall. I haven’t been out on the river much, but I have been out there. Am I just not fishing on the right days or is it an off year for this?

    Eleclady,

I have gripped about this numerous times that the serious big time white bass action is hard to find. In fact it has been three years since the massive schools of white bass have terrorized the Croix. You can find small hard to pattern pods at times, but the reliable open water top water action is hard for this guide to find.

We also now have sunfish everywhere….ugg.

Zebra mussells are also hard to find….good.

    Keep Catchin,

It’s been about the same time frame on pool 2. They’re still around, just not in the big schools I used to see.

That was my observation one time out last week near Hudson.
Most of the surface activity was actually big shad jumping.

What do you attribute to the fact that sunfish populations are up and white bass down? Just curious.

Good question for Turk. I miss catching the whites but ate two meals of gils out of there this summer and they were good.

I thought this downswing in white bass was a St. Croix phenomena, but from a few stories I am hearing that pool 4 and pool 2 white bass surface action is down too. I hope this is some kind of cycle, versus that a scenario where high sunfish population is detrimental to healthy white bass populations, and that sunfish do not eat all the white bass eggs…
So I started to think this is a cycle. but in 14 years of guiding I have never seen anything but a big healthy population of white bass on the St. Croix River…

    Have a good week all.

maybe people are taking advantage of the liberal limits on white bass… In fact i have seen a few boats that are loaded with people keeping everyone they catch….one after another. am i the only one who has seen this taking place?

In past years I have seen some boats doing this, regardless of fish size, but this year I haven’t even seen these boats out targeting the white bass, like I usually do.
It was too cold and windy the other day for me, so I haven’t been out there recently. Hoping to get 1 or 2 more trips in before I have to winterize my boat.

    Taking advantage is right.
