Spoonin on the Croix

Don’t know why I feel compelled to share this little secret of mine, but here goes. This is one of my favorite times of the year on the Croix, and I guess it’s because of the technique I use. For a couple of weeks now I have been on the Croix at least two days a week, usually only for a couple of hours. The worse day we have had is 9 walleyes and saugers. In addition to the eyes, we have caught who knows how many white bass, crappies, and smallies. All caught on Michigan Stinger Spoons(Small ones). For years now, when things get tough in August, I go to this technique and catch alot of fish. We fish them with three ways between 2.2 and 3 mph. Two weeks ago the fish were as shallow as five feet, Saturday we caught them in 25-30 feet.
Great way to cover water and get a lot of action! When it gets slow, give it a try!

Thanks for sharing! I have a tone of those from fishing Lake Erie. Would mind mentioning your most used colors?

    Thanks,

Does it seem to matter if it is hammered or not?

Ive been using the same thing here. Great light weight spoons you can rip fast on LC and trigger bites. You might also try the “worm burner” in place of a crawler harness….

Great advice Greatplains! Thanks for sharing.
I have 1 question, and only anwser if you want.
How far back are you running your spoons off 3-ways?
I’m guessing simular to a stick bait which I normally run 6-7 feet, but never tried this with a spoon and sure would like to give a spin.

    Thanks

Thanks for sharing Greatplains. It is definitely a technique I would also like to give a try. The last time I saw anyone spooning on the Croix was a couple years ago when Farve was still with the Vikes. And I didn’t think I would ever get anymore mileage from this picture.

Haven’t used hammered, all smooth.(Kinda like Favre’s back!) 6-8 foot back. Nice Picture!
