Before the walleyes get rocking this fall, don’t forget about the good smallmouth bass fishery on the Croix. These bass put up a heck of a fight, and will readily hit plastics.

We’ve had some good catches on tubes lately. My advice is fish both the very bottom and very top for smallies. They are all over the water column and can be caught over deep water on the top.

Pictured here are all recently caught warm-water late August/early Sept Croix bass. The monster in the first pic came from over 25 feet of water near the surface (a few feet under). The second pic is a 21-inch smallie caught on a jig and plastic twister tail.
