LAST “RAFT” ice slipped past Stillwater liftbridge at 8:20 p.m. Weds., opening the northern end of the pool from the Boomsite down past the tour boats. Had expected a lot more open water today but things were kinda calm again most of the morning. Appear to be about 2-3 weeks earlier than last year and the water levels are unusually low for break-up time. Veteran naturalist Jim Gilbert from WCCO’s Nature Notes says he is very concerned about the unusual weather and drought conditions. Was amazed to hear about the skeeters and but not about the box elder bugs. This warm stuff camped over us makes for a brown layer of air along the horizon at dawn here in the valley.
