09 26 2011 Fishing on the St. Croix River for walleye is very good. I have witnessed some mornings being slower than the others, however when multiple times in a week you limit out on half day morning trips, including a 15 keeper morning last Saturday I can safely say the bite is very good. Big fish are not common, but we got a 27.5 walleye Saturday.

For walleye trolling and jigging in 20 to 30 feet of water, I am using Rapala shad raps still, vertical jigging ¼ ounce to 3/8 ounce jigs with fathead minnows. I am also starting to slow troll three ways with baits, and this will produce very well soon as the water continues to cool. With three ways I will also pull original Rapala Floating minnows, plastics will take fish here.

Sturgeon fishing is also picking up and anglers are doing pretty good, and catching moderate numbers of these hard fighting sportfish. Sturgeon angling is conducted while the boat is anchored and you soak your baits on the bottom and wait for the bite. If you like the aspect of muskie fishing for the fight of large fish, you will LOVE sturgeon fishing because they fight harder than muskie and you catch many times more sturgeon on an eight hour day than you would ski fishing. An average sturgeon fishing day would number about 5 to 8 sturgeon caught, and on a good day 14 to 20+ fish can be caught on eight hour trips, no kidding. For sturgeon best baits are minnows, crawlers, cut bait (suckers), and dead shad. A common depth to find sturgeon is 35 feet deep.
Not a sturgeon got this walleye fishing – 46 pound mudcat.

The weather is sweet; guys are wearing sweatshirts and jackets over them, long john time for early morning trips. The fog is hovering over the water till 8:30 in the morning, then the blue sky and sun burns it away. Keep Catchin’

    Impressive fish and report!
    Thanks for sharing.

Can you tell us what the current water temp is averaging there on the St. Croix?

Got two limits from 7am to noon today. Also a 28″ and 25″ eye Tuesday so seeing some bigger ones with more regularity.

Here are the pics of the 25″ and 28″ eyes. Plus some other throw backs and a good stringer from last weekend. Same techniques and depths as above report.

I think with the heat this week will make angling a tad slower but still good fishing. Can’t wait for the plastics/jig and fathead/jig bite to start.

Enjoy the season, gorgeous out there…

September 12, 2011 Last weekend on the Saint Croix River walleye bite was flat out great we had many keeper sized fish (25 on Saturday) and some picture fish as well. Most of the keeper were walleye in the 16 to 19 inch range and with as mentioned larger fish with the biggest being 27inches.

Trolling Rapala’s was the best presentation for landing walleye. I have also been jigging blade baits and jigging and fathead minnows. I am targeting 19 to 29 feet of water. I mention “was” the best presentation, because for weeks the fishing has been hot and pretty darn good for my boat, but the last three days was moderate and then today in the morning slow.

The last three days I had to look and search to find shad pods, and then when I found them the bite was still tough. I am seeing bait pods on some structure, but the largest biggest schools of shad are off structure hanging in 50 feet of water. This is one of the reasons the sturgeon bite is slow by the way, that being shad moving daily and not structure oriented.

I am confident once the cold weather finally arrives…as long as it does not hit to fast and to hard…that the bite will resume. The forecast looks like we will get cool but not aortic cold weather so that is a positive in my book

There are still good walleye being caught, so it is definitely worth an outing, but again it slowed down, and I hope tomorrow it picks up quick. It did rain today, and who knows that might get something started, fish are funny that way.

The Saint Croix River is 675.4 feet above sea level in Stillwater, MN. The water temperature is 62.5, and has been this temperature for ten days. Water is clear little grass floating in the water. Keep Catchin’

Oct. 21 We caught 22 keeper walleye and sauger the last two days. I am using minnows and jigs right now. Minnows with 3 way rigs also working very well. Turning solid walleye on plastics right now as well. Water temp falling fast 55 degrees.
    Good luck!

I will be a newbie to the St. Croix this weekend. Where would you suggest launching around Stillwater? How is the fishing in that area? Any particular techniques we should use?

    Thank you.

    Bill,

That bite is right in your wheel house!

Maybe this year for Christmas Santa will bring me two spinning reels!
