I drove up to the Boomsite this afternoon and the St Croix is open from Stillwater upstream as far as I could see. The DNR boat launch bay is wide open and ready to go.

The river appeared open south of Stillwater but visibility was limited due to low hanging fog. I’m getting the boat out of storage and heading upriver as soon as I can. For some reason this winter seemed to last forever.

Hey Commanchero, It’s been open like that since last weekend YIPPEE! so I went to get my boat out too! Be carefull fishing before the walleye opener. I got stopped last year fishing for “Crappies and silvers” the day before opener last year. Man they were really leaning on me for targeting eyes before opener. All 3 of the CO’s were hammering on me about it but I stuck to my story and they left me alone…finally. I mean haven’t you caught crappies and silvers on #5 Shad Raps??? I would have immediately thrown back any incedental eyes or saugers since that’s the law.

    Good Luck,

    Ferny.

I got checked last year too. The trick is correctly answering the initial question you will get from the CO. “What are you fishing for?” As long as your response is anything for which the season is not closed, you are OK? As long as there are no illegal fish in the boat and you are not targeting fish during their closed season, you are good to go.

Mike – From the way it looks north of Stillwater I’ll bet the river is clear to Marine on the St Croix. I’ve had great luck in the spring with silvers north of Arcola Sandbar and the Apple River area. It is still a little early for that action I think. The water temp needs to warm up – probably at least 2 to 3 weeks away yet. We need continued warmth and some rain.

The mouth of the apple river is a popular spot for bass in the spring. There can get to be a few boats in there on weekends.
The train bridge north of marine on croix would be anouther spot to look.
The fishing peir at Osceola can be good and also just north of the bridge there. There is a little slack water just a cast up from the bridge on the mn side that holds bass in the spring. Then right at dark there is a eye bite. usually small fish. And if you stay after that make sure you bring out the big tackle. A few years back I managed a flat head in the 40# range. Nice thing is you dont need a boat for this spot.
Okay. Im allready for spring fishing on the croix.

    Comanchero,

Do you by chance happen to have a brother by the name of Aaron? If so I went to highschool with him I think if he graduated in 1993.

Hey Mike – Aaron is my son. I’m his retired dear old Dad who fishes all day while he slaves away at the Ford Plant making trucks. Glad to see you on the site. Keep me posted on how you are doing on the St Croix.
