Other than onestout and myself, who else is fishing Beanies River Rat Tourney this Saturday the 17th? Always a good time for a great cause

Soon to be announced also is a full day tourney on the St.Croix at the end of October hosted by the SCVWL.

I went to their website but couldn’t find a copy of the rules anywhere. Did I miss it or do we just get a copy of them the morning of?

I’ll be out there. Didn’t do well last year, hoping to do better this year.

This tournament plays loosely with rules and regs. Just a few years a go a sturgeon was allowed to be entered into the contest with out a tag. Tournaments like this give all tournaments a bad name.

I’ll be the first to call the BS flag on you. If you know that someone kept an illegal sturgeon and can prove it, why didn’t you call the tip line and turn them in? There are pictures posted online of the winning fish from past years, it wouldn’t be hard to prove.

I haven’t personally fished the River Rat, but know lots of the guys that do. They donate lots of money towards local organizations. Let me know what other local tourneys donate the amount this one does.

This is a well run event and deserves a reputation for just that! I do think that sturgeon were being entered in the past BUT it was alot longer than just a few years ago, most local type tournaments everywhere used to do that. The reality is that nobody even cared about sturgeon on the Croix 8-10 years ago. The DNR has constantly changed and analyzed the sturgeon regs in recent years and peoples views have changed too. You can’t really go back in time on a witch hunt for cat and sturgeon abuse…in the early 1900s our ancestors used to burn sturgeon to heat their homes

I do agree that the folks at Beanies run a great tourny.

Sorry for stepping on any toes. BZZSAW you are right it is easy to prove. Go back to 2007 and plain as day two sturgeon on display with no tags. Call tip line if you want to but I would prefer to chalk this up to ignorance on the part of the angler and failure on the organizer. After seeing this in 2007 I came to the conclusion the event organizer did not pay close attention nor were they enforced if the regs were known on the Croix. So yes as an event organizer the organizer did not do his due diligence in in keeping to the regs of the St.Croix. Maybe he has learned from his past mistakes I commend him for doing so if he has and I apologize for over stepping the boundaries.

    Remember:
Lake sturgeon may not be possessed or transported without a tag; validate and attach the tag immediately upon reducing the fish to possession

    – tag must be attached to the narrow portion of the body in front of the tail fin

    – tags must be attached so they cannot be easily removed

    – tags must be purchased in advance, are not transferable, and no duplicate tags will be issued

    – registration cards must be completed and mailed within 48 hours after harvesting a fish.

As for giving to charities that is great but this can not be an excuse to circumvent the rules knowingly or unknowingly. It is the responsibility for event organizers to know the rules and regs and to enforce them..

From what I was told (thanks BK), 2007 was the first year sturgeon tags were required.

Since I wasn’t there, are you saying someone complained to the tourney organizers when the fish were registered? I’d have a hard time believing that.

For someone to come out after the fact and blame the organizer is chicken poop in my book. The organizer didn’t break any laws.
