St Croix River is almost back within its banks at 679.9 feet and you can finally tell where the islands are. We still have a ways to go to reach normal summertime pool elevation of 675.5 feet but at about 679 feet the fish are back inside the banks so you can at least find them again.
I thought last night’s big rainstorm might drive the water back up but it looks like we will stay about 680 feet for a few days and then start dropping again. I think this will push the fish back into their normal summertime pattern.
It was a beautiful night to be chasing flatheads. Clear, Calm, Warm, water temp was 74 degrees and there is a perfect current flow for catfishing. Still picking up a little bit of grass in the current but not as bad as the last week has been. I moved back to some of my normal water level flathead spots tonight and found a beautiful fish right away. I hit this flathead early in the evening at 2000 and it was nice to be able to handle a big fish in the light. He measured out at 44″ X 29″ for 73 points and that kicks me back up into the GREEN on the King of the Cats Flathead Leaderboard. At least I’ve finally made the 200 Club. If you are wondering about that big cruiser next to me in the photo he watched me catch the fish and I managed to get him to come aboard the Battleship and take my fish photos for me. It was nice to have someone handle the camera so I could take my time and get good pictures. I thought you might like that flathead belly shot – he was a healthy fish.
