Crappie Question

Friday night I went out on the ice with my girlfriend and we probably caught 40 crappies total in 8-10 ft of water. We tried again last night (same depth but much colder) and didnt catch a fish. When really cold weather moves in, should we focus more on deeper basins when looking for Crappies? and when it warms up, look shallower again?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but would like to be confident in my spot choices when chasing crappies in -10 degree weather. Thanks!

Its probably more of a barometer change than the temperature. We had a major front roll thru late yesterday and that probably put your fish deeper.

Yeah MAJOR front that’s moving fast. However the theory now is deep basins but there’s a good post by Matt Johnson over on HSO that says this season has been quite a bit different.

In one of my crappie lakes I’m still finding weeds in 17fow that are holding the fish.

The lake is two deep basins(60+ ft) with a saddle between the two at 40fow. I believe with the weeds still holding bait fish there is no need for the crappies to move out to the deeper water yet.

My much smaller and shallower crappie pond is the other way around. Max depth of 25 and no fish shallower than 17fow. All the bigger fish seem to be holding much higher above the school.
