Been fishing this lake for the past 3 weeks and the crappie we were catching were all regular color I would say, this past weekend same lake same spot, the crappie were really black and dark green. So my question is: Do crappie change color during spawn like say trout do? While cleaning them they were all males and milking.

The males definitely turn darker during spawning season.

Found my answer on Google LOL
“You can find crappie turning black when it’s the spawn. As the water warms and the spawn approaches, crappie (both black and white species) change colors. In fact, male black crappie will turn nearly all black when they are preparing their nesting areas.”

^^^. The deeper into the spawn you go. The blacker those male fish get. Towards the end they are really black in most lakes

Here’s one of the blackest males I have ever got. Is that politically correct?
