Cranking rod

I will admit, I never knew there was a difference between cranking rods and casting rods. (yes, I’m new and I apologize for all the questions but I guess it’s the only way to learn) Was told that cranking rods are all in the moderate range for action and a different taper.

My question to you guys here is, what setups are you guys using? (brand, and length) And have you guys used a rod that’s universal for both cranking and other types of fishing?

    Thanks,
    R

Sixgill makes a really nice rod, fenwick with give you a good cheap rod.
What are you throwing cranks for?

Really, it is personal preference. I have been using the same spinning set up for trolling and casting for 30 years without a problem. All depends on your style and what you are trying to accomplish.

I really like the 8’6″ Scheel’s telescoping rods and both theirs and the Jason Mitchell two piece 10’6″ trolling rods. I have some 8’6″ and 9′ Cabela’s trolling rods too and I like them quite a bit for the money. I use them all for long lining, lead core and snap weights. I also use Cabela’s 5′ “shorty” rods at times for lead core. It all depends on how and where I’m trolling.

Basically bass and pike. But I could be totally wrong with using a crank rod for pike…

I was checking them out yesterday online and I’m very impressed especially the price. A good quality rod that won’t break the bank.

Stay away from lew’s tp1, I just blew one up last week when I popped a crankbait out of the weeds.

I am thinking just going to spend the coin and get a St. Croix Mojo Glass.

I have 2 of them and use for both bass and pike. They perform very well for the price

Any suggestions on reels for my new Omen 7′ cranking? (preferably middle of the road)

As long as you buy a MH rod with a fast tip you are fine using it as a cranking rod. I would go 7 ft or longer. I use a 7’4″ because the longer the rod the longer your casts will be and with cranks you want to cover as much water as possible.

Personally I’m in the camp of using my money to buy a higher quality reel instead of a high quality rod because the reel is much more important unless you are going ultra finesse and need a ton of sensitivity which in this case, you don’t.

They are a Texas bass fishing company. A buddy let me use his and I’m completely sold. As well he said customer service is top notch.

I have used many brands but have settled on Daiwa. They are the smoothest in my opinion and depending on the amount of $$ you want to spend the T wing system in the Tatula reels is the biggest technological improvement in years when it comes to baitcasters. I use the Fuego which is around $100 in stores but you can find them online for around $80. And the Tatula CT which is around $130.

With crankbaits you want a reel that doesn’t eat up line. Stay away from the 7.3.1 or 8.1.1 geared reels and go for a 6.3.1 or 5.5.1 gear ratio. If you get a reel that pulls the crankbait too fast it won’t run correctly in the water. So stay in the middle geared reels.

    Hope that makes sense.

7’-3” Duckett White Ice MH. I don’t like the glass cranking rods (personal preference) and think the White Ice has the right tip action for casting and keeping fish buttoned. Very light and when casting/cranking all day it makes a diff to me fatigue-wise..

Definitely makes sense. I like the daiwas too. Found a couple Fuegos for $48.88 at farm and fleet. Was wondering if that was a good reel for the money and I think you’ve answered my question! Lol

That’s a steal! It’s the only other real I’ll use other than the Tatulas. You’ll be happy with it.
