Cranking battery recommendation

Well the time has come to replace my cranker. I am still on the original interstate that came with the boat when I bought it in 2015 but I had it load tested recently and it’s finally toast. I might go with the exact same replacement but I am open to suggestions.

    Thanks

Have had great luck with interstate batteries but bought new boat and it came with odyssey’s in it. Heard there good also but time will tell. Good luck

I used to run with interstates, but with the new electronics I found the interstates would drain pretty fast if I didn’t run the big motor every hour or so. I have since switched to an odyssey starting battery which will only need starting the big motor every 4 hours, so I gained a little electronic run time with it. Found out the hard way that just because an efi turns over, it will not start unless the battery has at least 9 volts. A volt meter has been added to the boat tool box now also.

I just replaced a 2015 Cabelas group 30 AGM this weekend with an Interstate group 31 deep cycle. I need 500 CA to start my motor and the battery has 650. It has more AH than the Cabelas and more RC. I haven’t had it in the water yet but it will be powering my electronics, pumps and downriggers. If it has more capacity than my previous battery I’m going to be pretty happy.

The issue may be in how long it lasts. I’m expecting less life out of this battery than an AGM but I am really hoping to see my boat in the next year or two.

I run an odyssey on the ranger. Never an issue in 4 years.

I’ve had 3 interstates go toast for my TM…averaging about 1 a year so I’m not a huge fan.

    Odyssey Group 31.

I have ran a few different brands, but found odyssey to be the best AGM out there.

I should add that I’m on year 3 with my 3 group 31 deep cycle Interstates for my trolling motor and haven’t noticed any loss in capacity. I can run these for about 2-3 days on the Rainy River without charging.

Thanks Matt but I am not in the market for deep cycles with my trolling motor at this time as I just replaced those last season.

The current cranking battery (the original) has lasted almost 6 full seasons which is pretty darn good for a standard interstate battery IMO. Quite honestly, I don’t know how it could be any better for about a $100 battery. I’m tempted to buy the exact same one as a replacement but I will continue to listen to other suggestions so keep em coming.

Interstate batterys have gone downhill in my experience. They used to be my go-to, but after having 4 begin to fail after 2yrs I decided to go another route. Been using the Walmart everstart Maxx marine battery now for both starting and trolling batteries. It is literally the only thing I’m willing to purchase from Walmart. I’m hoping this set gets me to the point in time where lithiums become “affordable”.

Just curious were the bad Interstates bought at Costco? We have been seeing some of those failing early and it has me wondering if they are making them for Wholesalers with less quality.

I have recently switched my cranking battery to a Napa Legend deep cycle battery for running time with the electronics. It is the dual purpose battery and I have been told the charging systems on outboards do not charge at a high enough amperage to cause problems.

Understood. It might be worth checking to see how many CA you need in a battery. The larger deep cycles may have way more than enough to start your motor plus be ideal for powering everything else you need.

Double check your needed CA. The group 31 has 650 CCA and I think the 27 has 600.

Nope, these were all bought from the boat dealership.

Thanks, just trying to get an idea if there overall quality is going downhill or if my theory about Costco had any validity.

X2 – My Merc Opti needs 1000 CCA. Somewhat hard to find in traditional lead/acid.

I’ve had about a dozen deep cycle interstates over the past decade + and none have lasted less than 4-5 years for me.

Bought a wallyworld brand once and lasted less than 2 seasons.

My next boat will have either AGMs or lithium just because I hope to keep my next boat for decades.

Had the same luck with my Interstates, had some last way longer also. Have any of you switched to the Lithium and if so how has it been?

Keep in mind you will need a new charger for the switch.
