Crankbait Storage

I’ve used traditional plano boxes to hold crankbaits for years but am looking for a better alternative. Currently I’ve probably got 120 or so cranks stashed in the traditional plano boxes by color, but hooks are constantly tangling and things are crowded.

What is a better option? I’ve noticed a few boxes online where the baits are stored on-end, essentially hanging by their hooks.

    Thanks for the advice.

You can wrap the hooks on each crank with a rubber band and they will remain untangled. Takes a while, but works well. Here is a tray with a few rippin raps.

I do the rubber bands as well. Added bonus: leave the rubber band on while tying the lure, no hooks to swing around and stick you, tangle in the palomar loop, etc.

$4 plano box vs $20 crank caddy = more money for cranks.

Excluding my back stock, I manage about 300+ cranks and about 150 blade baits. Doesn’t mean I have that all in my boat at one time. I rotate Plano boxes specific yo the body of water in on.
I’ve tried a lot of different storage concepts and keep going back to Plano boxes. For me the hardest discipline is to not over pack an individual box

    Same here, plano boxes.

It all comes down to how many lures you want with you. Me, I always want a LOT. That means cram as much into 25 plano boxes and go fishing.

I like to think I’m on the high end of fishing efficiency. Everything I do I am trying to Max fishing time. With lures in the water I’m setting out my next 2 or 3 to go on next. Yes I’m shaking cranks apart, but doing it while other rods are in the water, therefore no loss in efficient and by maxing out my boxes I can keep a hoard of tackle in the boat.

I’ve seen some clever ways to store tackle but most would double or triple the already massive amount of tackle boxes I carry.

If you reeling up and then picking out a crank, your doing it wrong. Maybe not wrong, but you are losing time doing it that way.

I also find trolling to be an incredibly non relaxing activity, there probably isn’t another tactic in my boat where I’m so darn busy. I rarely put cranks back nicely, like with rubber bands. The moment the next one is on I’m letting out line then tossing the old lure in box or on dash and back to the trolling scramble.

I use 2 of these for about 200 cranks. I have overflow in Planos for specific types I don’t use as often (square bills, etc)

Plano 3700s for me too. I use a Sharpie to write what’s in each box on the ends of each and carry them in Cabelas softsided bags that hold 12 3700 Plano boxes each. I can zip open each bag and see exactly which cranks are in each box. If I want to relabel a box, I just use Goo Gone or something similar, wipe the old name off of a box and write the new one in its place. I troll cranks a lot and while trolling, I’ll take the boxes holding the crankbaits that I want to use out of the bags ( I carry three in the boat) and place them in the back of the boat for easier access. It’s not perfect either but it’s the best I’ve found for how I fish.
I tried Crank Caddys and didn’t care for them.

My crank inventory is on the smaller side. Keep maybe 20-30 on hand to cover the basic depths/colors/sizes and that’s it. Freed up some room in a spinner bait box few years ago and now I just hang the cranks in there. Waterproof, small amount of space in the boat, cheap… works for me
