How do you guys know what depth your crankbaits run? Certain lures, such as Flickr Shads and Husky Jerks, I know running depth because I use all the time. However, lures like the Smithwicks run different depths depending on whether you are trolling or casting. I’m most curious about trolling depths. Is it as simple as running them back till you hit bottom and crank them up?

I use the Precision Trolling App. It has many lure depth curves. The lifetime app upgrades many times a year.

either that or you can get the precision trolling app and it costs a certain amount for each lure you want data for.

The easy answer is yes. Send them until you feel them hit a little. Precision trolling data has an app that works well. But it’s not free.

Awesome. Didn’t even know there was an app for that. Going to make things a lot easier

Then take a Sharpie and write the depth on the lure. Run the same speed with the same line to be accurate.

I’ve found that the Precision Trolling dive curves to be a great tool. I’ve been using the Precision Troller’s Bible and adding pages as new crankbaits have been added since the original book was published. Match the crankbait, line diameter, speed, length of line out to the depth that you want your crank bait to run according to the published dive curve and you’re ready to catch fish. The Precision Trolling App would be a great addition to your fishing knowledge.
