Costa Del Mar "Trivex" lenses

I have always heard that Costa glass lenses (580g) are clearer than their polycarbonate lenses (580p). However, today I was at an optical store where they said if you order 580p prescription lenses (which I do need Rx) that the polycarbonate lenses are “Trivex” (something that is not available in the non-prescription polycarbonate lenses).

The store clerk said that Trivex is much clearer than polycarbonate lenses and almost on par, if not on par, with the glass lenses that Costa is so well known for (also lighter weight, and more shatter-resistant than glass). Anyone know if this is true?

Does anyone have prescription polycarbonate lenses in their Costa’s?

Last summer I had a question about Costa’s. I sent an email through their website and it was answered the same day.

I have 580g non-prescription lenses AND my polycarbonate prescription lenses. I swapped out the 580g lenses because I hate wearing contacts, in favor of the prescription lenses.
Granted, my polycarbonate lenses are the grey lens and my 580g are the blue, there really is no comparison between the two. The crispness of the 580g is incredible, BUT I like the grey lenses for more all-around use in MN. I think they are a better color choice for our water (freshwater vs saltwater).
Now, I cannot say whether my polycarbonate are “trivex”. I have had these lenses for 6 years so I am not sure if that is a new offering or not???

I don’t have poly lenses or Costa brand glasses. I like Smith’s with their glass chromic lenses. I just broke my third set in a decade due to repeated fumbling. Poly is tempting.

I’m ordering glass Smith’s again for polarized fishing glasses, but will be following this thread. I’d like a secondary pair of for everything else that could also serve as standby.

Did a crap ton of research last summer on this topic. Can’t speak to Costa, have Maui Jim and Kaenon Rx lenses.

Depends on what “on par” means to you. Glass has the best clarity but how much better? Trivex is pretty darn good and you may not be able to notice much if any of a difference. Some of that depends on if they do the rx digitally or not too.

Is the minimal difference in clarity worth more than pros in weight and impact resistance of Trivex? That’s a personal question

I took BK’s advice and called Costa. The person I talked to said that in prescription lenses, they easily sell more Trivex than glass. She said the clarity is somewhere between polycarbonate and glass, and probably a lot closer to glass. It may scratch a little easier than glass but is significantly lighter and more shatterproof.

This was a revelation to me, after reading numerous posts on here and other sites, I thought everyone pretty much had the 580g lens. Poly outsells their glass lenses by quite a margin I guess…

I have Costa with the poly lens. Previously had a pair of Maui Jims glass. The Maui are several years old but comparing the two the Costa is the best!!!
