Cost of oil change for Mercury 60HP fourstroke

I know it’s super easy to change the oil but, since it’s under warranty for a few more years, I thought I’d have it done just so I have good service records. I emailed a Mercury dealer/service place and they said it would be $100-120 just for an oil change which seems absurdly expensive to me. Does anybody know if there are more reasonable places in the Twin Cities area?

Shop rates are in that $100/hr range these days. So labor, filter and oil would put you in that $100-$120 range.

Just a quick glance at Amazon, $45 just for a filter kit including the oil.

Not saying the dealer or you are wrong/right but rather that’s going to be the rate for the job at “certified” dealers.

    Thanks for the info Francis.

What do other people with new motors do? Is there any potential warranty issue with doing it yourself if you save your receipts for the supplies?

Just save receipts that follow the recommended schedule and you will be fine.

X2. They can’t void the warranty if you are a “do it yourself” kinda’ guy…RR

Change it yourself. As has been said, they cannot void the warranty because the owner has maintainance done elsewhere or does it himself. Keep a log book and save the oil/filter receipts.

Besides, my thinking would be may as well start now. You’re going to be doing this at least yearly for a long time.

That price is absurd to say the least. 3 quarts of oil and a filter.
It’s so easy you should just do it.

It isn’t really that absurd. Think about overhead costs for the building and equipment, and I would think the certified mechanics make pretty good money. Insurance to cover damages in case the filter fails and the motor grenades. I don’t like to pay someone else to maintain my equipment, but I understand the high cost of running a business.

Then why is it so much cheaper for an oil change on an automobile with twice as much oil? Either way I feel sorry for those suckered into that kind of a fleecing. If the poster lives near Woodbury I will gladly help him.

Mainly I would say it is your neighbors kid that is changing oil at an oil lube place, and I doubt there is an certified mechanic on their staff. Same thing at a car dealer. They hire kids to do oil changes. I doubt a marine dealer has the oil change volume to hire an extra person, just to take care of them.
