mojogunterPosts: 3303August 26, 2017 at 4:00 pm #1712140Iowa boy just showed you a link for a remanufactured powerhead for $4200. Why would you think it would be double? It wouldn’t be 4k for labor to install a new powerhead. I guess a new powerhead may be 9k
August 26, 2017 at 4:27 pm #1712144I would cut your loss, and get yourself a new Yamaha. should be able to get a decent deal on one this time of year.
August 29, 2017 at 10:07 am #1712558Well it’s official #4 cyl. is gone. Engine is toast. In calling around to shops I’m having some trouble figuring out the rebuild costs. Anyone have an Etec rebuild done in the last few years?

I just pinged Eric Olson from Evinrude about this post. I know he is doing some tourney fishing so he may not respond right away.
August 29, 2017 at 11:13 am #1712574I gave Buzz Dean’s contact info. Once you go Marshal, you never go back…or so I’ve heard.
bradl110Posts: 276August 29, 2017 at 12:14 pm #1712581Oh… I meant Yamaha.
How does that help the guy out by making a joke about going to a yamaha. I would be pissed if I just blew up my motor. No time for jokes. And I’m guessing re-powering with a Yamaha 225 will cost him about 17K-18K. If he has the option to purchase a refurbished 225 etec powerheard for 4k I would do that. These usually carry a 1-2 year warranty.
August 29, 2017 at 12:45 pm #1712589Also all you guys who think Yanahas are totally failproof need to do some reading about the powerhead failures that are headed yoyr way. Yamaha had big issues with 200 and over engines blowing up. Freshwater walleye guys just haven’t hit the hours where the failures hit.
No mechanical objects are failproof.

Settle down Brad. Vern asked for the info and I simply responded that I sent him to Dean. What he does with the info is up to him.
Chill dude.
August 29, 2017 at 12:55 pm #1712593Now if I would have said…. “That could put you in a “jam.”” then you would have something to complain about.
I don’t know who would say Yammi’s are bullet proof.
I know my 90 2001 Merc has been very good to me but I wouldn’t call that bullet proof either.
What I do know is that Dean will bend over (backwards) to ensure people are happy when they walk out the door.
Now I’m off to find some walleye cheeks.

Seriously, best of luck getting er fixed. Nothing worse than a boat with no propulsion.
At least you got Calhoun and Harriet to electric around on.

calm down, no jokes here, if rebuilding a 12 year old motor cost half of new, it is just something consider,a guy will have a good warranty and the latest technology which is ever changing.

Seriously there had better be a built in martini bar on that thing.
August 30, 2017 at 9:07 am #1712756Who is Dean? Serious Question. Always good to know a motor mechanic in case the need every arises and Sheldon is unavailable.

Here is a 2006 225 etec at nelson marine for $10,500
August 30, 2017 at 12:00 pm #1712796Thanks Ralph.
Dutch, not all of us buy a new skeeter every other year. Not sure why you would have expected I know Dean on a first name basis.

You can’t compare a 90 horse to a 225. Anything under 150 rarely has problems. The big boys can and do blow up fairly frequently. The Etecs with the american flag on the side are a terrible motor. All you hear of is guy blowing them up. Get it past 300-400 hours it’s almost a certaintly. I feel bad for this guy.
The cost to rebuild is significant. It’s all fine and good if you are buying a new one every couple years. But for guys that can only afford a boat every 10 years or so, owning a big motor is a risk. It’s too bad these companies can’t figure out how to make these bigger motors last.

[/quoteWell he has been here forever and you have been around long enough. I don’t expect you to know him personally but his name is sorta recognizable. Alot like BK & James.
milemark_714Posts: 1287August 30, 2017 at 1:42 pm #1712831A good rebuilder should find out why #4 cylinder went out for a smoke. You could go to the Etec owners site for opinions.A proper rebuild should address the original issues that particular unit has/had.If the motor wasn’t a notable turd,it could be worth it.Think FICHT?
Then you have to look at the other components and go from there.Like gearcase,trim/tilt,and fuel/electrical parts. It is a crap shoot for sure.Parts for those motors are crazy expensive, and you can just end up feeding a beast.

THIS I want to see!!!
August 31, 2017 at 10:59 am #1713003Stop making jokes Tuck!
So you going to put two on the back of your float Vern?
I know with the money you make you could have three…but I don’t think three Yammis will fit back there.
