Corps of Engineers schedules work for Mississippi Locks 4 and 5
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded a $740,000 contract to Tunheim Construction of Moorhead, Minnesota, Sept. 30, to make repairs to Mississippi River Locks and Dams 4 and 5 next spring.
Lock and Dam 4 is located near Alma, Wisconsin. Lock and Dam 5 is located near Winona, Minnesota.
At each of these locks, the work will include making repairs and adding around 200 feet of riprap to the embankments from the storage yard and spillway. The work will also include resurfacing of the Lock and Dam 4 private access road to the embankment and the gradation of the dike road at both locks.
The existing rock protection at these sites is well past its intended design life and is being reinforced to protect against erosion due to wave action and overtopping from high waters.
The project is expected to begin in the spring after the snow melts and be completed by October.
The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2014 $100 million budget, nearly 1,600 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $155 million to the national economy.
