Well, yesterday was one of those mornings where the forecast said, “Stay home” but the weather looked a little wishy-washy. There’s nothing I hate more than staying home because it’s supposed to rain when it doesn’t, so my daughter and I milled around for a while in the morning stewing on a decision, then headed for Lake Macbride.
Lake Macbride is one of the few places in Iowa (and the only place near here) that grows lilly pads, and since that’s one of my favorite ways to bass fish, I had to give them a chance to be productive. After about 20 minutes of winging jigs and buzzfrogs, I stopped believing that the fish were in there.
We moved to the bank and started pounding away with spinnerbaits. The bass were on fire. Ended up fishing for about 3 hours and catching a fish probably every ten minutes or so just beating our way down the bank. Coming through a weebed Mr Musky thought he was pretty sporty attacking that spinnerbait, lucky he didn’t bite me off. Never caught a musky in MacBride until now. He taped out at about 37 inches.
Bass went between 12 and 21 inches. I haven’t fished Macbride much this summer, maybe one other time, but it would appear that I’ve been missing out on some good bassin’. The motor reg drops off this week, so get out and enjoy (just don’t fish any of my spots, please).
