McBride 5/27/04

    I fished McBride today with a friend and his Son. We only caught three small Crappie. It didn’t appear as anyone else was catching any.

    I had to use my Maxxum 74 bow mount because of the ten horse motor restriction. My charger connection had came off of one battery on my onboard charger, so my trolling motor wasn’t running very well. Here I am going about ½ mph while these people are running around with 6 to 10 HP motors at full throttle. I’ve never heard of such a stupid law. I make less wake up on plane with my 70 Evenrude as they do with those small motors plowing water. I just hope my batteries charge up OK now. I am glad for this site to vent my frustrations

    Uh oh… Let’s hope Joe doesn’t see this thread… It could go nuclear.

    I think I missed the hot bite this year at MacBride. I got some pre-spawn crappies in the freezer, but the cold snap a couple weeks ago messed up the really smokin’ fish-every-case action for me, and I just couldn’t get out when I needed to.

    Guys, most of the crappies we have caught out there this last week and weekend haven’t spawned yet.Sunny-warm-days,we was catching them in water 2-8′.On the cloudy-cool-days we would move out from them water depths and slow troll 9-19’of water.The fish seem to hang more around 8-13″ down.We was sloooow trolling (hardly moveing)tube jigs tipped with gulp grubs and two way crappie rigs with minnows.We would also throw twister tails now and then when we run in to a good school of them.They seem to favor dark colors with fleck in them.We were catching around 50-75 some days more,but would only bring home 10-20 of them,not hunting for meat just some to eat.Not bad catches for 4-6 hours. Hope this helps you guys out there.

    Thanks for the info Lee. I don’t know if I will make it out again before the spawn is over as I have a couple trips in the next few weeks, but I will store that in my memory banks.

    I use to pick up some nice Crappie at rathbun trolling 5A Bombers.
