Ok, so I traded in the old jiffy 30 for a new (and much lighter) Strikemaster Chipper Mag 142 this year. Decent auger and very light compared to the old Jiffy. My problem is that the Chipper blades cut too slow for my run and gun style of ice fishing (reason why I got rid of the old and heavy Jiffy 30, I drill up to 50 holes some days). So, I am wondering if a Lazer mag auger bottom will fit a chipper mag powerhead- I don’t see why it wouldn’t and heard of a guy on the forums who did the same conversion I am asking about. I have looked online and tried many different searches for just an 8″ Lazer mag auger bottom but have come up empty except for 7″ and 10″ models. Would really like the 8″ but cannot find it anywhere. My next step after this is to call Strikemaster and try to order one direct but I am afraid of the $$. Anybody able to help me out of know of anywhere I can find an 8″ LazerMag auger bottom? Thanks!

UPDATE: Did find one on Cabelas, but… it’s at a Cablela’s price. Can anybody find one under $189.99?
January 20, 2016 at 8:11 pm #1594196Try D-rock in Roseville. They’ll usually have some used laser drills for less than $100. But do it after the Brainerd Jaycees ice fishing contest. The drills they have will be brand new demos from the contest.

I did exactly what you are talking about. They have “used” lazers for 125 and new for 160. The used ones they sell are bought from retailers like cabelas or gander that were returned, so typically in great condition.

January 21, 2016 at 7:04 am #1594269I did the same thing you are talking about a couple years ago. I bought a used 8″ lazer bottom from Drock for under $100 and put it on my SM Chipper. Works just fine. It’s not a lot faster, but takes away having to press down on the auger to drill with chipper blades. It only made me thirsty for a faster auger so I sold it. Now I run a lazer 2.5hp and don’t worry about anything anymore.
January 21, 2016 at 11:43 am #1594352I’m running an 8″ on what was a 10′ chipper…. much better.
I believe that it’s much better! Holy Cow that’s a big hole…
January 21, 2016 at 12:12 pm #1594360Dirty Jigger, where are you from? I live in South Dakota, and have a 8″ Lazer Mag. I was thinking about buying a chipper to re open holes in the ice shack. I might be willing to trade if you ever make it to South Dakota to Fish.

I am from central wisconsin, so a ways away lol. Thought about coming out to north Dakota this year but already did an outstanding lake of the woods trip. I was able find a Lazer auger attachment so shouldn’t need to trade now, but maybe willing to sell the chipper auger attachment. Let me know if your interested.
January 21, 2016 at 6:39 pm #1594450Thanks for the replies everyone! Was able to finally track one down on amazon. Still not even sure how I found it, just kept clicking on suggested items lol. Anyways, brand new with blades and cover – $160 and free shipping. Can’t wait to get it. Having to press down in order to get the chipper blades to bite has become pretty frustrating.
January 22, 2016 at 10:06 am #1594578Other than being able to cut through dirty ice without dulling blades, what are the advantages for the chipper blades?

They generally work better for re-opening holes that have frozen over.
January 22, 2016 at 6:01 pm #1594715Well, already got my new Lazer auger unit delivered today and quickly swapped the chipper unit out. Met a buddy out on Petenwell Lake here in Central Wisconsin and WOW. WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE. I see the light and unless I absolutely have to, I am never going back to a chipper blade again. I have used chipper blades with the trusty old Jiffy 30’s my whole life and thought those cut pretty well considering. Now, just smooth cutting, no downward pressure at all, and a lot less wear and tear on my powerhead vs the chipper blades. Only worry now is keeping them sharp.
January 22, 2016 at 9:10 pm #1594764I gotta disagree. Chipper augers are not good for re-opening old holes. the last time i did that with my strikemaster chipper it caught before punching through and i messed up the “chuck” on the powerhead cuz now the powerhead wobbles pretty bad. anybody else experience this and how did you repair it???
