Console cracked

Got the boat out of storage today. It was shrink wrapped and stored at a marina. My driver side console is cracked all over! It looks like a spider web with cracks going in every direction. What could have caused this and what course of action do I have? Its not much of a bother to me to look at it but I’m worried it will get worse. Btw the boat is a 2016 so it’s less than a year old.

Ouch! Sorry to hear it. I’d take lots of pictures and contact the marina right away. I’d be persistent with whatever options you can think of (marina seems most likely, but maybe the manufacturer or even insurance?) until it gets fixed.

Yes. Id try to find out if it got broken due to taking a shot or if this is a design flaw/problen with materials/workmanship. Contact both manufacturer and marina. Be ready to digest bs and be firm.

You likely signed a damage waiver with the storage company unless it was a buddies barn. I wouldn’t hold out much hope there. You mentioned it was shrink wrapped. Any chance they overheated the dash? Check with the insurance company and see how that goes. A phone call to the dealer asking about it also wouldn’t hurt. You will get a quicker answer with the dealer calling first rather then you. He can tell them the issue and see if he can get it covered easier then you can. If he can’t get anywhere then go after them yourself if you are sure it’s there problem.

I’m thinking it might be the shrink wrap. Take another look at it before throwing rocks at anybody.

    Good luck.

Do you have pics you can share? Same thing happened on my Lund while it was being stored. Mine is 10 years old but the dash went from pristine to cracked all over in one winter.

Theory : shrink wrap was pushing it down and than it got cold?
The wrap and the freezing combined caused the spider cracks?

Yes, do you have any pic’s? Not that I can be of any help but just curious. Was the windshield or the console itself?

This is why you have insurance. Take it to your dealer. If it’s not a warranty repair, have the dealer fix and make a claim.

It’s a little hard to see the cracks but here are some pictures. They cover almost the entire console.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll definitely be calling the marina, my dealer, and the manufacturer tomorrow. Hopefully I get help from one of them before I need to consider involving the insurance company

I’d focus on talking with the dealer. It sounds like your boat was winterized no different than another boat. IMO it should be a warranty issue. It looks like a boat with a windshield, and the screws were torqued too tight.

Sheet ya, hairline fractures what it looks like. Would be hard to pin that on shrink wrap. Not a collision. Good luck?

have some good news. called my dealer this morning and told them what happened. they said exactly what I wanted to hear and nothing more, “oh boy. im ordering you a new console right now. I will let you know when it arrives. bring your boat up here when it arrives and we will fix it for you. We’ll get this taken care of.” The whole conversation took about 5 minutes and I didn’t have to complain or raise my voice one bit. That’s service! waytogo

Wow, that’s some great service. Good to hear it’s being taken care of right away. Still doesn’t answer the question as to why it happened, however…

    Agreed. Leading theories include:

cold/heat fluctuation. It was in cold storage
shrink wrap job – something went awry
    manufacturing/product defect.

My best guess is a combination of the first 2 but who knows

If you google “alumafraft boat console cracks” you will see you are not the first to have this problem. Perhaps this is a know issue? Glad they are standing behind they warranty.

I suspected as much when the dealer didn’t put up much of a fight or even ask me any questions. Now onto the next problem which is that my ipilot remote charger doesn’t work anymore. I searched that as well and found that it seems to also be a common problem. Next call will be going to minkota. As they say, mo money mo problems

Share the name of the dealer. People love going to places that give great service. Everyone is quick to throw a name out when service is bad but not good.

I purchased the boat from Cabelas in Rogers MN. This is the 2nd quality control issue I have had with the boat/boating accessories and in both instances they responded with top notch support!

If your boat is a 2016, tell them you want a 2017 console. Alumacraft redesigned it in ’17 you may like it.

It looks like a material issue. Either poor choice of plastic or a very poor quality plastic. Either way a certain warranty claim. Hopefully they get it resolved so it doesn’t continue to reoccur.

took about 2 weeks for the dealership to receive the new console. I spoke with the service woman today. She gave me the option of when to bring it in and said that if I bring it in after opener they will have it repaired in 2-3 days. Very nice woman and good service. I did ask her if this was common and she said that a lot of the new consoles are cracking. She said she would like to just replace both of mine but Alumacraft wont warranty it unless its already cracked (my passenger side console one is not cracked). kind of alarming that this seems to be a problem with their newer boats. Each boat/product has its faults I guess…. Anyway I hope this new console is made out of better material than the last although im sure its just the same thing.

Well got the boat out on the lake today. First time out this year. Had a wonderful time with the family. Upon putting the cover back on in the driveway I noticed cracks in the passenger console. Remember cabelas replaced the driver side console last year for spider cracks. I figure “oh boy now this one too”. I take a close look at both consoles and they both have hairline cracks. At this point I’m assuming this will just be a problem forever. Of course I’ll contact cabelas and see what they say. Won’t let it ruin this great day. Happy father’s day to all!

Good luck if you bought from Cabelas. I purchased new 2017 Trophy 205 at Cabelas Hammond, IN that i took delivery of in August of 2016. Alumacraft is starting to get sh#@ty about warranty work at Cabelas.
