Conceal Carry Weights

So I think I’ve narrowed down my CC pistol to the XDM 9mm or the XDS 9mm.

Here is my next question. Is a guy short changing themself with just 8 rounds in the XDS? Are the extra 6 rounds worth the weight.

The difference between the two loaded pistols is 7.5 ounces. 26.3 ounces for the XDS loaded vs 33.8 for the XDM loaded.

The size difference between the two is a non-issue for me in the way I plan to carry. But I’m not sure about the weight. I know I can carry an extra clip for the XDS but that brings in more weight (and more items). What are your thoughts?

    Great choice Wade!

My G 26 weighs in at 26 oz with 11 rounds. I forget that it’s there.
I have an extended mag that holds 18 rounds. No weight problems but it extends out of the grip too much for me.

I keep extra loaded mags in places that I feel they could be needed, but don’t carry them on me.

    You’ll love that XD!

I’m going through this debate as well. Don’t have my CC yet but got the basic handgun done and now moving on to purchasing one I can get comfy with for CC class.

The 9s I’ve shot were really nice. Certainly packs a punch but still seems to large. Im thinking a 38 that will be able to manage a larger clip but still have the necessary takedown in a lighter easily handled package. I look at bullets from 38, 9mm, 45 and all at close distances seem like they would get the job done.

Bigger is always better its portrayed, but its one notion I’ve never bought into. Either way I certainly want more bullets in the clip.

X2, they are both nice. A compromise between them would be the Mod 2. Double-stack for capacity but not as big as the full size.

If it’s possible to shoot both, do it. I’ve tried a few of the small single stacks like the XDS, Kahr PM9, and the Glock G43. Mostly with a co-worker of mine.

What’s really interesting is how we come to very different opinions on whether we like a particular one or not. It’s more interesting in that we both really like the same full’er size XD’s and Glocks.

Ex. rented the XDS in .45 at a local range. My experience was that I shot it very accurate and comfortable but my buddy hated it. He loves the Kahr and I can’t hit anything even without stress. Hand me a full/compact Glock and I’m good to go. Shot the G43 at my carry class and sucked.

On another note, these recent threads inspired me to get off my butt. Submitting my paperwork to the county this afternoon. Ssshhh, don’t tell my boss I’m using company time jester

I plan on carrying with the Urban Carry Concealment Holster (http://urbancarryholsters.com/holsters-40/original-urban-carry.html ), a cargo pocket holster (since I always wear cargo pants/shorts) or an ankle holster when wearing scrubs.

That is why the 1/4″ width shouldn’t (hopefully shouldn’t) bother me.

As far as on my feet. I’d say 60% sitting 40% standing/walking while carrying.

I find that mass more dictates what is comfortable to wear and conceal so weight never really factors in. Even if something feels a little heavy at first you will get used to it and not even feel it eventually. In my opinion a weapon should be chosen by fit to a persons hand. One of my criteria is that all 4 fingers grip the handle. I dont like grips that omit my pinky.

I’ve hauled around the usual hogleg 357’s and double stack 9mm’s and have found ways to pretty much keep’m covered, not concealed, just outta sight. About all I’ve got out of being macho is a sore back from the nearly 3# of weight hanging on my belt. Just after Christmas, I let a Ruger .357 LCR follow me home. Little new guy fits perfectly in a pocket holster. A few .38’s thru it tell me I’d better double protect the ears with plugs and muffs if I expect to play with the big stuff. Being realistic tells me that anything over 5 yds is a “shoot and hope” situation, but then, I never used the others for protection, a bit of luck and this one will follow suit- – jerr

Ruger LC-9S is small and handles 8 rounds. The smaller the better, if its heavy you will leave it at home.

I wish I liked the LC-9. A friend has one and I just don’t like the way it feels or handles.

My feelings exactly. I really wanted to like it. Here’s a potent small 9 that is very inexpensive and feels GREAT. SAR B6P. It’s based on the CZ-75 action. Very cool. Problem is you cant find holsters for them. I have one from the mfg but it sucks. I was thinking of getting one custom made. I got this one to throw in a pack when canoeing but it would make for a good carry gun.

1st- Be sure your handling the NEW LC9-S which is STRIKER fired, no exposed hammer. I HATED and would never want to shoot the hammer fired version, I don’t know how the striker version is so much better but it really is one of my favorite guns to shoot, not many people can say that about a small snappy carry weapon. Also- I have not had any problems finding IWB holsters Suzuki? Its the same holster as the old LC9 which MANY LEOs carried on their ankle according to “internet” chatter.

If your set on the Springfield I wouldn’t consider anything without the S, Don’t worry about capacity, anything over 6 rds is plenty you want the slimest/smallest pistol you find comfortable trust me! Carrying seems easy but its best to be able to have it on you and “forget” its even their in terms of comfort. In a life and death situation you will not be reloading…. you will be overwhelmed with fear and adrenaline, you should be looking to exit the situation ASAP. just my .02

I had the original LC9 and loved how it carried but hated the trigger. I was excited about the new striker fired version but in the end the trigger reset still has to much travel. My next carry gun will be the 9 mm Shield.

Well, I was considering the Walther PPQ as another possibility for a CC weapon. I’ve shot it and handled it many times and I like the weapon. After putting the PPQ side by side today with the XDM and XDS I’m planning on sticking with the Springfield for my CC. The Walther will be a nice at home weapon.
