I’m a WI resident and have both MN and WI permits. Can I just renew my MN or do I have to do WI too?

Not sure but FYI it’s a permit to carry, not a conceal carry permit. I know that probably just sounds like semantics I think it’s good for people to know.

What is the point in having both? Don’t both recognize each other anyway?

I just looked it up and you are correct. I have MN so I’ve always been able to carry in wi with no problem. But MN does not recognize Wisconsin

So I would say MN would be what you want

Yea MN is kinda pissy about recognizing other permits – but you get quite a few states with a resident permit, and less so with a non-res.

You can just do the MN. However some states will not recognize nonresident permits should you go there. Like MI. Question is will WI recogize it with you being a WI resident?

Living in WI you also need the WI permit, the MN permit allows you to carry in MN as well as the other states. So yes you need both. At least WI is cheap and easy, $40 and you do it online, most of MN is $100 and you have to visit in person.

My Wisconsin card says: Concealed Carry License

I would do both to be safe.

Where do you renew your MN permit? I use Washington Co, pretty fast (under 2 weeks usually) and cheap enough.

I am pretty sure (doesn’t really mean anything) that if you are a resident of WI, you need to have the WI permit to legally carry. Reciprocity allows non-residents to legally carry if they hold a recognized permit.
MN’s stricter reciprocity is due to them requiring gun training and shooting as part of the CCW permit process, so they will not recognize other state permits that do not have those requirements.

I have used the same private training party the last two renewals. http://www.mnfirearms.com
You meet him at the range, pop off a few rounds and get your paperwork for renewal.

Yes but you have to take it to a county, submit the application to the Sheriff who then issues it if approved.

I said “get your paperwork for renewal”. I assumed everyone knew the process.
The Sheriff Dept part is the easiest.

I should clarify, I believe in MN it’s classified as a “permit to carry.” I’m sure each state words it its own way.

I don’t think you need a permit to open carry in Wisconsin. In Minnesota you need a permit to carry and permit allows open or concealed carry.

I’ve had a permit for almost 10 years. I let my MN permit expire after the first 5 years. BUT! I’m 75 years old and never in my entire life has anyone checked. Still, when I travel thru MN I unload. It’s like being in a 3rd world country & I only go there for medical reasons and when traveling to WY. The issue with MN & the WI license is “training”. The important issue is legal history & most people who have one can’t get a permit. I bet less than 1% of nationwide permit holders actually have to shoot at anyone.
