I have an opportunity to fish lower red lake with a Native American guide. Ive tried to look up laws about bringing a weapon onto tribal land and it seems like each tribe and reservation has different rules and the red lake tribe rules only talk about laws for tribal members. Wondering if anyone has more information about carrying a weapon on tribal lands, specifically red lake.

    Thanks

Good question. I bet your guide would be a good resource.

If you feel you need to be armed to go fishing maybe you should rethink the trip?

It would be my recommendation to not bring it. Doesn’t matter what the rules are, you get an ornery tribal officer he can do what the F he wants and you’ll probably never see your gun again.

I’m assuming you’re bringing it for the possible dbag people you may encounter, and it’s safe to say those dbag people roaming around causing trouble up there will have alot more than a CC.

Just one man’s opinion. I wouldn’t worry about it if it’s a reputable guide. I’d be more concerned about where I’m leaving my truck than my actual self.

From what I found on Red Lake Band, if a member needs a permit from the Chief, I would guess so do visitors.

Are you getting to fish on lower red itself, or on the smaller lakes around it? I under the impression that LRL was strictly off limits to non-band members?

If you can get on it – I am sure everyone here is looking forward to the report!

All I know is you are correct in that it’s down to individual tribal law. I hunt some reservations out west for varmints and one rez has some very specific laws on magazine capacity and the possession of FMJ ammo is illegal which includes some common match grade bullets. I was glad I looked into it.

Unless you can find info in writing, I would leave the gun home.

Yeah i think its actually some of the smaller surrounding lakes. Its a connection through a friend whos gone with him before so i didn’t get a lot of detail just the invite.

Thanks for the feedback so far fellas

I honestly wouldn’t mess with it. Seems like more bad things could happen than good. I have done a similar trip and everyone knows who the guide is around there. Never felt like I needed to carry. Ran into several tribe members and they were all very nice and wanted to chat. Now when I had to leave the lake and leave the guide I drove like a bat out of hell.

Crappie, do you know the name of the guide?

    Darius Rosebear?

Take the chance and leave it at home. Carrying it could cause problems if noticed and leaving it in your car could cause a problem. Kinda sucks but you got that rare chance to fish a nearby lake off limits to most fisherman.

No specific info but just my viewpoint.
Band can carry off the rez…
If you would carry it fishing any other lake then I see no reason not to carry.
Do what you would normally do.

I have not fished with him personally but have heard nothing but good things about him.

Sounds like he is very well respected both within the tribal community as well as from non-tribal citizens.

If I was going into the Red Lake reservation that would be the one guy I’d trust, both as a fishing guide and to relax and have a safe experience.

You don’t need an invitation to fish with the guide. Anyone can book a trip with him and fish those lakes.
Red Lake Nation will allow non-tribal members but they must go through a tribal member guide.

Lower Red Lake is off limits to non-tribal members no matter what.

Lower Red Lake is off limits to non-tribal members no matter what.

I looked into this after it was brought up on this thread. From the documentation it seems there are 3 ways a non tribal member can fish LRL.

    1. With the consent of the tribal council
    2. You are married to a tribal member
    3. At the discretion of a tribal officer

Not sure if this is true or not this was just what was outlined in this document

Never had to deal with tribal police or courts on criminal matters. Contracts for past business relationships with tribes specified any disputes be litigated in tribal court. Did not have good experiences in those instances, don’t recommend non-tribal members getting in to position to potentially have to deal with tribal courts. Leave the gun home, it’s the lowest risk approach overall.

I don’t think I’ll ever need a fire extinguisher but I have a bunch of them. Smoke detectors too. It would be great if they made a “here comes trouble” detector.

Taking the whole gun thing out of the picture, I have no inkling to fish on that side of the lake to start with. But that’s me.

Good luck Crappie, I hope it’s what you expect and more. (that was said nicely)

No crappie, maybe you didn’t look far enough.

On page 3 of the document you linked it clearly states…”non-tribal members are prohibited from fishing LRL and tribal portion of URL”.

Immediately below that is the list of lakes open to non-tribal members, and must be permitted and accompanied by a RL Tribal guide.

I would believe your guide will arrange for your permit.

Also I think you’ll be targeting trout.

I would leave it behind and enjoy the fishing. If your not carrying no chance of it turning into a sh!t show.

You will need to check with the tribal chief to see if you can carry. Give the tribal police a call and they will let you know. EZ PZ
