My neighbor doesn’t do internet and is looking to upgrade. He can’t seem to get an answer, so I told him I would try here.

He wants a 2020 Alumacraft Competitor 205 Sport and wants to put his current motor on it. Motor is a year old 150HP Etec.

Do any of you have this boat? If so, what kind of HP and +/- can you pass on?

Will this be enough HP? The new boat is rated for 250 HP.

I think it’s too small of an engine but I’m not basing it on actual knowledge.

Depending on his expectations, it probably could be propped to get it usable for a light load. With that said, he would more than likely have a very difficult boat to sell with a 150. I couldn’t recommend it.

I recently purchased a Comp Sport 185 and went with the Suzuki 150SS outboard. Hole-shot is great and generally plenty of reserve torque. I’m actually thinking of getting a higher pitch prop as it seems there’s power left untapped.

I think the 150 is plenty for the 185 but would be concerned about being underpowered on a 205. The 205 is just about 2 feet longer (18’8″ vs 20’6″), an inch wider (beam of 95″ vs 96″) with a 2″ wider transom (93″ vs 95″). Biggest jump is in weight capacity – max on the 185 is 1,600lbs vs the 2,450lbs for the 205. Empty weight is 1,710lbs for the 205, compared to 1,500lbs for the 185. All that said, really comes down to what he wants out of his boat but if he’s running a near-full load, I think the 150 would be underpowered…

    Will this be enough HP?

I think for most applications, he will not be happy with the performance.
For him and 1 person and a light load, probably OK. But thats a big boat, and its got a big gas tank. Lots of weight adds up quickly in a boat like that (I know, I’ve got a Tyee 1850/175 Verado) My hull is 2 foot shorter and over 200#’s less, and the least motor I would have considered putting on it was a 150.

For the most part forget about pulling tubers/skier’s too.

I wouldnt do it on a 205, but would on a 185 as mentioned. The extra length will pose some issues I would think.
I wouldnt be concerned about lower than max HP rating on an aluminum boat. I have a 185 tournament sport (18’11”) which is rated for a 225. I have a 150 suzuki on it and I honestly couldnt be happier. The 150 is essentially the same as a 175 (same bore and stroke), but I get nearly 50mph and the holeshot is incredible even when heavily loaded.
This boat is about 2 feet shorter than the one in question so I just dont think that would be a good idea.

I have passed these responses In to my neighbor. Thanks! I think that’s what he was thinking too but he was just hoping not to have to part ways with the one year old 150. Great to here it from multiple guys.
