Full moon October……

Well, we went to the dance and ask if the big girls could come and join our merry little band of boats. We offered a wonderful variety of plugs and colors while being pulled at different speeds. But alas, our efforts were shunned by anything over 10lbs…..

The water temp was higher than any previous full moon October that I had fished and the results were most of the fish were still in a late summer patterns. The fish were scattered and not enthralled with plastic wobbles. We finally, after several days, switch to bottom bouncers and picked up the normal Columbia River size fish from 3-9 lbers.

Lessons were learned by all who attended. Monitor and adjust they call it in education and in fishing it is called don’t fish memories.

As a side note….. The Indians were very successful in reducing the big fish with their nets. Many 5+ lb fish were netted and sold at twice the price of salmon. The demise of the Columbia as a trophy fishery continues.. IMHO

Thanks for the report Dan. Glad to hear you guys got into some good fish. A 9LB. walleye is still a great fish.

It is a damn shame to hear about the indians netting those great walleyes and killing a awesome fishery like that. I have to get out there while there is still some walleyes to catch.

I couldn’t find the big girls either. I needed an 11+ just to make it back on to the LCWClub’s top 10 list. I didn’t get anything over 6.5. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it down there before Friday night and gave up early on Saturday due to the rain. I was just using cranks…mostly trolling model hotlips but there wasn’t a great bite at Ough Reef. Next time, I’ll have to try upriver a little further.

I agree with Dan about the Indian nets but down around portland I think it is more than just the Indians. Commercial nets have been in and any walleye caught accidentally by salmon anglers are guaranteed to be bonked.

I’ve never heard of a hotlips crankbait. Could you post a picture of one for me? It must be a regional lure. Thank you.

Perhaps that is why the fishing has slowed. Maybe if you throw some hooks on there things will improve?????

    Hooks!!! I should have known.

Actually, I usually put Gammi 4s on them.
