Colorado elk hunting was very good to us

Lots of early snow, very cold temps, and many windy days changed where and how we hunted. Was very strange that 3rd season rifle had the majority of elk migrated to low elevations and herded up. Saw herds of 300 to 500 at a time. Just wild.

No big bulls for us this year. But the good Lord was looking after us and kept us safe plus a little success.

Only mishap was a bull we shot crossed over into private land and the rancher was dead set on not letting us recover it. Made it explicitly clear that he would call the sheriff if we entered his land. I suspect/hope he took it and it didn’t go to waste. Figured he needed it much worse than us

There’s some nice elk. Congrats on the kills. Some good chewables there.

Sounds awesome a nice work. 2 yeas and I’ll be out there.

Seems odd there’s no way to recover it even if he says no but some states may be like that. What a waste.

CO was not available to assist. Land owner makes the rules, but a CO TRUMPS. Nothing legally we could do

Congrats guys! Still a bucket list item for me and something I’m trying to coordinate for my 40th birthday gift to myself (2020 season).

Did you guys just buy OTC tags?

If that happens in Wyoming and the landowner says NO, then not even the game warden (their title in WY) can legally retrieve that animal.

    Just the way it is.

    Nice job on the elk.

Sucks having to say uncle on a shot elk like that. Kinda understand why they do it like that out west to keep people off the fence lines, but it’s seriously an unethical approach to the problem imo. And yeah I get it, don’t hunt boundaries and drop them in their tracks, but things happen hunting and it’s horse crap to have to loose an animal like that to landowners who are like that. And yeah my dad and I own hunting land. If it’s a wounded animal and someone wants to retrieve and recover it, they should have the opportunity to do so quickly and efficiently. Sure hope the guy retrieved it and it went to someone who could utilize the meat.

WI is the same way. If the land owner won’t let you on his property it’s his right. Doesn’t matter where the animal is. If you cross the property line you would be trespassing.
