Not sure anyone still watching but UMD goalie was just spent or injured and pulled himself in 4th OT. Still going.
tswobodaPosts: 8445March 28, 2021 at 12:57 am #2025307What a game! The 3rd and 4th OTs were about 5 minutes of good hockey and then 15 minutes of chip and change. UMD was consistently taking 20 second shifts. Not surprising it was ended early in the period and by the freshest line in the game.

That was weird. And Stejskal looked fine when he jumped off the bench to celly after the game winner.
March 28, 2021 at 6:40 am #2025310What a game! That game was won and lost by millimeters at leat 10 times. Two really goog teams. I’m a Sioux fan – bummed….
March 28, 2021 at 7:24 am #2025313Jeez, 5 overtimes? I fell asleep in the third OT.
At least half the frozen four will be MN teams and if Cloud can pull an upset it will be 3 out of 4.
March 28, 2021 at 7:24 am #2025314What a game indeed. Too bad the Sioux couldn’t take advantage of the come-back momentum and the offsides gift. No bad blood against Duluth. It was a very well-played, well-disciplined game played by very similar programs.
March 28, 2021 at 7:47 am #2025317From the Athletic……….
No. 1 North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth played in the longest NCAA Tournament hockey game ever, a 3-2 win in the fifth overtime for Minnesota Duluth in the Fargo Regional final which ended early Sunday morning.
Freshman Luke Mylymok scored the golden goal to send Minnesota Duluth into the Frozen Four semifinals against Massachusetts. Saturday’s game broke the NCAA Tournament record set by the Wisconsin and Harvard women in 2007. North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth combined for 119 shots.
Minnesota Duluth is seeking its third consecutive national championship. The Frozen Four is April 8 and 10 in Pittsburgh.

March 28, 2021 at 6:29 pm #2025450It’s a barnburner for sure. Hope the Brodzinski kid isn’t hurt to bad, it didn’t look good.

Ya no kidding they were relentless in that period.
michael keehrPosts: 347March 28, 2021 at 7:16 pm #2025464Yes great win. 3 of the 5 mn teams in the finally 4. I still thought ND got shafted I thought they should have got the free game being the 1 seed.
March 28, 2021 at 8:21 pm #2025487Go Gophs
Go HuskiesGot a nephew on each team.
Are you the uncle of the Brodzinski brothers or the Perbix brothers?

Easton broke his femur, underwent surgery after the game.
March 29, 2021 at 7:51 am #2025544Rodents are getting slapped around pretty good.
yea they stunk up the arena thats for sure, but give Mankota credit…… they skated like they wanted it more.
March 29, 2021 at 8:59 am #2025588Finally the first positive impact following the execution of the WCHA. 3 of the final 4 from MN. Rarely “allowed” to happen back in the WCHA era.
Too bad the Gophers appeared wore down and were beaten by a team who wanted it worse. Gophers silver spooned children continue to struggle when it counts. 20 superstars does not equate to the best team on ice. Also enjoyed seeing Hastings out coach Motzko.

Man, that’s tough for him! Looked awful, but I have to think its probably better he broke a bone than blew out his knee no? Rough way to end his season, but he is a major reason they got to this point.
Wasnt that a strange scenario that played out for SCSU’s third goal? He scores and gets a penalty? Anyone catch what the penalty was? I know they waved off the goal right away and I thought the ref said goal tender interference, but then reviewed it and determined good goal. If they gave him a penalty for goaltender interference, what is he interfering with since the puck went in before he even touched him?
If they called something else then they changed the penalty which is BS.March 29, 2021 at 9:32 am #2025612Easton broke his femur, underwent surgery after the game.
That is a shame. Too bad. Major injury no doubt.

They sure did. It looked like a Lemaire coached NJ or MN team from back in the day. Get an early lead and then completely lock down. Mankato is clearly a much better team when they score first. Then they can play their game.

Two full years difference in average age, that’s a huge difference when it’s 20 year olds against 22 year olds. Seems some people either don’t realize that, or don’t want to.

So, being young is the reason they couldn’t score? If so how did they get through the regular season and this far into the play-offs without scoring? I’ll admit they might be younger but that didn’t seem to work against them up until yesterday. Give Mankato credit, they shut down a pretty good program and deserved the win.

If they called something else then they changed the penalty which is BS.The only thing that makes sense to me is they called a [SOFT] penalty on the ice and couldn’t take that off the board based on video review.

If they called something else then they changed the penalty which is BS.I was listening on the radio and the Husky announcers were debating that call too. It was still called goaltender interference. Jim Erickson was questioning it, but the other announcer, Dave Reichel, said the refs can still call it regardless because its more of a safety issue by running into goalie, regardless of a goal being scores or not. Strange call no doubt.

This didn’t seem to matter years ago back when the Gophers were “good”.
Also, just for the record, the best players leaving college early to go pro is not just limited to the gophs… it happens across the board
March 29, 2021 at 11:41 am #2025670Terrible luck for Easton Brodzinski, he’s had a great year and has to be wrecked not to see it thru to the end! That’s a heckuva hockey family, you must be a proud uncle!

Or no one cares since they are all adults. Always some Whine to go with the Cake at the U! Props to Mankato on building a great program. I’m sure they’d much rather get blue chip recruits from their backyard, over the lesser rated guys or recruiting Juniors guys from Saskatoon and Moose Jaw…
tswobodaPosts: 8445March 29, 2021 at 2:14 pm #2025712So push the David vs. Goliath narrative of “silver spoon” and “superstar” recruits losing to the obscure 3 years of juniors recruits who aren’t household names. But just casually leave out the 2-3 year age gap like it’s nothing.
I have no horse in this race, I’m not a gopher fan and haven’t really even followed college hockey for 10 years. I grew up a die hard SCSU Huskies fan, and that was well before they were relevant. Just pointing out the other side to a tired narrative that people love to push every time the Gophers lose.

The Gophers got beat badly, plain and simple. They couldn’t generate any sustained offense against a very well defensive-structured team. They had a good season though overall. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Because it is nothing. Gophers average age 21 years 2 months, Mankato average age 22 years 8 months. 7 of the 10 youngest teams made the tourney, 3 of the oldest teams made the tourney. It’s a skill game, and the Gophers generally have their pick of the most skilled kids.

CaptainMuskyPosts: 22539March 29, 2021 at 3:09 pm #2025733There are certainly other teams you could pick to use the age critique besides Mankato. When the Gophers lost to Union and Yale several years ago, those teams even had players pushing mid 20’s. That’s a big difference.
I dont think age had anything to do with the outcome of this game. The Gophers couldnt generate anything and that is less about them I think and more about how well the Mavericks played.
I do think the Gophers (and other teams) who have Olympic sized ice sheets have a disadvantage come tourney time compared to those who play on NHL or North American rinks. Gophers had no time or space last night. Kudos to the Mavericks, they deserved it.
