A lure that has really grown on me over the last season or two is the Chatterbait or bladed jig. It was a top producer for me during the cold water months (Spring and Fall seasons) and when fishing dirty or stained waters. Bass and Pike seem to love em! The biggest question is what type of trailer to use as I’ve found several that have yielded good results.

I picked up my first 2 bladed jigs this winter from a guy that custom makes them on another site. Anxious to try them out. What would you recommend for a trailer on these? Flukes, paddle tail minnows, crayfish, etc?

March 24, 2016 at 1:36 pm #1609043I use flukes because I don’t want to mess with the action.
Suzuki, have you tried it when the fish are really active and aggressive?
I was a little skeptical at first and it didn’t help when I felt how “loud” the vibration was when reeled it in on my first cast. My first bass was when I was fishing it just under the surface like “buzzing” a spinner bait.
March 24, 2016 at 1:42 pm #1609044I have tried them many times in many lakes. There have been times I’ve changed to same color spinner bait and caught fish. I have only tried them in NW Wisconsin.
March 24, 2016 at 1:47 pm #1609045Last time I used them I was running paddle tails behind them and they worked great. Just as OP said, it was early season.

Hmm. I gave it try last night. I think the bass are bedding now though. And I was a little distracted by the crappies.
March 25, 2016 at 9:16 am #1609209I’m one of those guys that bought a bunch of Chatterbaits 10 or 11 years ago when they first became popular. Tried them a few times when prefishing for bass tournaments but never caught anything. Finally got serious about using them a couple of years ago, and have caught a ton of fish on them. For a trailer, I use the 3 1/2″ Little Swimmer from Bitter’s Bait and Tackle in Longwood, Florida. They have dozens of colors so there’s no lack of choices. 2 bags of 6 for $5, so it’s a pretty good deal, too. The shape of their swimbaits is the same as some of the major tackle manufacturers, so you’re getting the same thing at a lower cost. I find that I use the Chatterbait in place of a spinnerbait or swim jig now. The website for Bitter’s is http://www.bittersbaitandtackle.com. Their 4 1/2″ Naked Swimmer is also a great swimbait by itself with a weighted 4/0 or 5/0 hook. Good luck!

Your not assimilating very well if your still calling them crappies and not calling them specks!
We’ve caught some very nice fish burning the originals with a fluke. All the off brands don’t compare to the original coffin style that z man holds the patent for. They have been very diligently protecting that blade design for good reason. They flat out work.

I work a couple blocks from bitters! That’s where I am picking up shiners tonight after work! They have great pricing on their plastics, but if you walk in there you will know they make up for it with people buying in big quantities. Seriously, they have every shape, size and color plastic, which makes it hard to buy just a few. There stuff is good quality too. No frills, I don’t think they make anything that is scented.

I was going to say specks, but I know the speck, bream, coppernose shtick gets old.
Z-Man is all I use. It’s amazing how much vibration it sends out with just a short pull. Those chatters are more versatile that a spinner bait too. Last night I I was doing short hops on the bottom like a jig. But I also buzz it, swim it, stop and go, just about any retrieve works.
March 25, 2016 at 12:44 pm #1609257Several years ago a friend took me bass fishing on a small lake during the summer and he did really well using chatter baits for some nice sized largemouth. I had never fished a chatter bait before and didn’t even know what one was. But he made a believer out of me that day.
I thought they’d be a great cold water, walleye bait… kind of like a combination of my two favorite cold water walleye baits… a blade bait and a ring worm. After several attempts I have yet to catch a walleye on one. Even when I’ve been pitching and catching a few walleyes on blades or ring worms and then switch to the chatter bait, I still haven’t caught one.
Anybody ever catch walleyes with them? They sure seem like they should work for walleyes.

I would toy around with a few different trailers and see what works for you. You can use a paddle tail, Fluke, Live Magic Shad, Havoc Subwhoofer…The later 2 trailers have been my favorites over the last season or two.

I started using the Z-Man originals but I thought the hardware could have used an upgrade, I like the Elite’s better for that reason but not the price tag. For the $5 price point I prefer the Strike King Pure Poison. They are very protective of that patent!

That was actually a St. Croix Premier and it is 7′ Medium Power.

I caught 3 on a D & M Baits Piranha bladed jig last year. That was a first for me.
