Looking for some cold weather gear – coat and bibs. I don’t do much ice fishing but would like it for those cold days in the boat. I’d like to keep the pair within $500. What would you guys suggest?

$500 gives you a lot of options. I’m like you where I fish early season and late for sturgeon so we run into fairly cold weather but I don’t ice fish.

If you were ice fishing hard core and a lot I’m guessing what you choose might matter but for mostly temps near freezing or warmer, anything will work.

I have frabil i2s and they have been just fine. For those days near freezing, a base layer, flannel lined jeans, bibs, sweatshirt and coat are plenty warm.

I’ve seen similar posts like this but geared more towards ice fishing. If you search you should be able to find a lot of good opinions. I’ve always seen striker predator bibs and coat mentioned a lot. The combo should keep you under $450.

I bought the Striker Predator suit in Nov 2017 and not only have the suit has kept me warm but also saved my life. Fishing the river last March in Clinton IA I fainted and woke up in the river, they are worth every dollar. I know that there are other suits have flotation built in them and problay are as good. Something to think about, I know my family is happy that I did.
    Good luck and good fishing

Buy a rain suit 1-2 sizes big. You can easily layer any way you want up to and including ice fishing weight. I have one specifically for this application. It doesnt even have to be premium. Just decent breathable waterproof.

I have yet to get cold in my Ice Armor Extreme jacket and bibs. If anything I am usually pulling the inner liner out as I get hot. Great gear with excellent customer service.

Striker Predator Suit. I wear basketball shorts underneath mine in the winter because they keep you so warm. Also the most comfortable I’ve ever had as well. Waterproof, and floats in the off chance you ever find yourself in trouble. Can’t go wrong with them. I have also had the Clam Ice Armor and while it isn’t a bad suit I found the Predators to be significantly warmer.

Predator suit is some great craftsmanship. If anything it gets too hot. If you want a deal try the ice show in the cities. I can’t recall but I want to say I got bibs and jacket for $250? Probably less? I wear mine on our late fall trips to Rainy river and can’t say anything bad except I have to clean all the fish slime off when I get back.
