Lol now its a competition about who has a tougher dog.
Enter the pitbull, doberman, or rotweiller anyone?
From my experience dogs that stay outside are more resilient to the cold. For upland hunting it likely makes little to no difference as the dog is active and keeping warm that way. For waterfowl, it’s different story. I wet dog having to sit still for extended periods of time can get cold.
I have a friend who’s put a ton of time and money into a young lab for duck hunting. He sleeps in bed with him and is shivering cold every time we’ve gone hunting. Even when it was 45-50 degrees. Poor dog is miserable the whole time. They adapt to their environment. If you keep them inside they don’t grow the coat they would if left outside.
My dog never got cold to the point of shivering. She hated being in the warm house during winter time though.
The nice thing is that we can choose how we want to raise our own dogs. Everyone should just do what feels right for them and respect other’s choices on what to do with their dogs.
Now that we’ve come full circle, does anyone think that a 50° garage and a dog bed is animal cruelty??

I’ve got 2 kids, a third on the way, and a wife.
A 50 degree garage with some sort of padding that is quiet sounds like a peaceful night for me as a human.

So good
I couldn’t imagine myself sitting on my recliner in the evening watching tv in the middle of February and having my dog laying in a dark garage all alone…
But hey, that’s just me..
Grew up with Labs and they never spent a day inside. Had a kennel and a dog house. During they day they were out on the two acres. We would try hay or blankets in the winter and they would kick them out. These dog’s were the best hunting dogs. Dogs lived and survived outside long before we moved them inside our house.
If you want a dog for a pet hen treat them like a pet. If you want a working dog then treat them like a working dog.
Before I get attacked for this our dogs were well taken care of and loved. Our dogs always out performed any dog that lived inside.
We had an outside lab with a heated pad , bed , straw bedding, ect. Sucker would chew up the bed or drag it outside and sleep. Would hardly sleep inside on that pad . We tried and tried. Nope . Rather sleep outside. When it got real cold we put him inside the garage but he hated it .
What about food? You can’t possibly love your dog if you don’t feed them the best of the best
Working dogs such as cattle dogs and other dogs that spend their time outside. You house dog guys seem pretty touchy about this subject. Never called any dogs soft. Each person choses what they want their dog to be and fits their families needs. Its part of the reason I do not have a dog now because I know my neigh boors would call me in for leaving my dog outside overnight.
Also should call you in for cruel treatment of an animal making them drink miller lite.
My dog can also kick your dogs a$$
I see you went with the purse dog over the kitty option with your Ridgeline.
Bucky I basically did just that second weekend of deer hunting, best I have slept in years.

The purse dog is basically my spirit animal
In response to the OP I think its doable. Maybe leave a light on so they can see their way around the semi strange surroundings and plenty of bedding. Lean towards deep and fluffy. And water of course. Monitor them one night and make sure they aren’t shivering. I’ve done similar when they caught fleas from killing and eating rabbits in their yard.
I know my dog would rather sleep outside but my girls have to have him at bedtime and when they wake up. He moves back and forth all night. He will sleep on the couch for a while then move to other side of couch then the floor. Thinking he moves when he gets to warm.

Back in my old dogs day, he slept out side in the coldest of temps, back when dogs were dogs, he also has to chase the chickens up hill both ways even in the deepest of the deep snow. He wasn’t no 50 degree garage dog like dogs these days.
In all reality, my dogs both the big and small one are as Pampered as it gets. They sleep in bed with us, sit on the couch and watch movies with us and eat as good as we do. I never understood the point of a outside dog.
One thing I did notice with all the labs we had over the years is the yellows had thick coats and under coats big ole otter tails on them, not sure if it was a coincidence but the 2 blacks we have now and a previous black are as fine as shorthairs… almost.
EP,to many Coronas for the guard dog?
Yup, She beat me to the 12 pack.
