We had this conversation a few weeks ago here. It you didn’t put a killing shot on the deer, it is not your deer.

I feel for the kid. At the end of the day, he made a bad shot and there was a significant chance they would never have recovered that deer. (shot in leg). Very glad that he was learning to make every reasonable effort in tracking and his dad did what he could do. We only know a limited portion of how it all played out, and how the neighbor handled it.

Based on the details in the story, this is quite a bit different scenario than the debate a couple weeks ago (multiple deer shot by person without enough tags).

I guess I feel more sorry for the dbag land owner that had to keep the deer if he is that hard up. Maybe there is more history between these guys than appears in the story?

Based on the story details, seems like the Land Owner is kind of a butt head at the age of 34 for not letting the kid tag the deer but the kids dad is also a little bit of a whiner. The Dad could be teaching his kid that if you don’t get a kill shot then its up in the air instead of thinking the kid should get the deer for a poor leg shot and according to the CO the land owner has a right to take the deer no matter what.

IMO, this should be a teaching moment for the father. If it was indeed a leg shot the land owner should be thanked for putting down a wounded deer that could have had a slow death. I don’t understand how the land owner comes out of this as the bad guy. The only part I disagree with is the coin flip. The land owner put down a wounded deer. It is his deer. Maybe I have these views because we have never party hunted. I would never be able to look at a mounted deer and be proud about it knowing my shot was poor.

I think the landowner was way more than fair giving them a coin toss chance.
Lesson learned for kid. Bad shooting doesnt get you game. Not to mention 11 years old is too young in most cases for a kid to be gun deer hunting. Where I grew up it was 14 for a good reason.

In WI we can mentor hunt 10 yr old and up, My 11 yr old grandson shot his first deer a 3 pnt buck with his dad this year 1 shot quartering thru the chest cutting heart off lungs the deer dropped in his tracks. Some guys feel any deer that ever stepped on there land is there deer! He seemed like he was reasonable with the offer to flip for it ,since it was an awfully poor shot! as a mentor of a young hunter I feel you have the responsability to teach good shooting ,get out and shoot a bunch before season so the person has a chance to make a good shot.
