Heading to Clear Lake the 2nd week of January. Any tips you can offer will be appreciated. I don’t want to know your spots, but what do I need to look for, what colors are good on the lake, has anyone caught a muskie through the ice?

All depends on what your targeting. If your fishing yellows you’ll want to go to main lake area and use green and/or gold. Green always seems to be the hot color. Fish aggressive and if no fish keep moving. As far as crappie I know last year a lot of nice ones were caught along the reeds in 4ft or less.

Caught a 40 inch muskie through the ice there near a rock reef. Jig up high when you see the bait fish running through. Smalling jigging spoons were work well for yellows and walleyes. Early and late bite is best. Tipping spoons with minnow heads or tails will get action. Set lines with minnows work as well or tip ups with small shiners or big fatheads.

I agree with green and gold for primary jigs. Last year I had better luck in 4ft or less for crappies and walleye. I liked fishing the big lake near the Baptist camp in early season for yellows and the little lake in the later season. Red spikes seemed to work good for me. Also small gold spoons seem to be effective loaded with a minnow head or spikes. Clear Lake Bait and Tackle is very good about putting you on the fish and telling you what they are bittin on. They’ll give you a paper map and draw the hot spots on there.

Thanks guys, we are going to fish unguided for two days, then we will be going out with Kevan Paul on January 10 hopefully coming home with a nice mess of yellows. I doubt that my group will try and target the Muskie, but what would be a good set up for them?
