Cleaning rust

Client asked me to take a look at his model 700 in .223 it was in a gun locker in a house fire and sat for days in water. I broke it down and gave it an oil bath. The glueing has some light rust that we can fix. However the rifling has pitted rust in the barrel. I don’t want to get too abrasive in the barrel. Any thoughts on smoothing out the pits?

Was thinking maybe a good cleaning then a “break in” period with cheap lead bullets????

That is a bummer. The only way I have gotten rust off is to blast it and refinish. The pits if deep enough are super hard to clean. Or sometimes super fine steel wool can clean some it it off. I prefer the gray synthetic pads and soaked in like a CLP. Seems to work pretty well.

    Good luck.

I assume you are talking about the inside too. What about fire lapping it?? That has done some wonders to barrels in the past.

I have not had good luck with fixing pitting inside barrels. You’re best bet is to clean it real good, cake it in oil and shoot it to see if the pitting has affected the accuracy of the gun. Chances are it has not made a large impact on the guns overall accuracy.
