Does anyone have these or used them. Just curious it looks like what the guy used before me in the wheel house I just purchased and was wondering if I just go ahead and run them or swap out the mounting to go with something else.

You don’t need ice to test them.
I always showed up to rentals with my home made ones.
Can you set them and they hold the weight… can you pull line off with smooth tension.
Usually all it takes is some washers, lock nuts, and lube.
August 31, 2020 at 2:08 pm #1969439Thanks Fish Blood. Sorry I was not clear, he only left behind the mounting hardware. So I was just thinking of not having to screw something else to the wall if I did not need to. Not sure if they are the clams to be honest, but from internet searching it looks like they could be.
September 1, 2020 at 1:16 pm #1969686Will do if you look at the clam mounting it looks similar just a plastic piece mounted to wall with a vertical hole in the center for a rod to go through. Thanks for the responses
September 3, 2020 at 8:30 am #1970245That probably means Lindell (my favorite) or the cheap Ice Castle knock offs will fit right in. Most come with mounts so it’s not a big deal either way.
September 3, 2020 at 9:10 am #1970261Thanks 3rdtry I have been looking at those also. Do they have a loud rattle like the old wood rattle wheel or is it like sand rolling around in there?
September 3, 2020 at 9:29 am #1970273Lindell are the quietest but also the smoothest. The old Productive Alternatives wooden ones are as loud as any and work great. Don’t waste a lot of money on expensive rattle reels. It’s very quiet in a fish house at night and I have no problem hearing them.
September 3, 2020 at 9:38 am #1970277I have always used my wooden ones and love them. Just like the mounting that is there, it looks really clean compared to some I have seen. A buddy of mine gave me a couple of the Ultimate rattle reels he doesn’t use anymore today I’m gonna see if they fit. Thanks
September 3, 2020 at 10:39 am #1970314My favorites have been the Lewandowski (spelling?). I have an EARLY set of the Northern Lights and they’re ok, but there are some design issues that cause recurring problems.
September 3, 2020 at 11:03 am #1970321Just stay away from the Catch cover brand! Worst invention ever!
They are not smooth and the line gets wrapped on the inside of the spool. I’ve swore more at the set I had than any other item I’ve purchased.

September 3, 2020 at 1:16 pm #1970353Yeah I agree Joe friend of a friend has them in his and they suck.
September 4, 2020 at 8:12 am #1970537Only problem I had with the wood ones way back was they were mounted right on the wall and the line wasn’t centered in the hole. That made the line sometimes freeze to the ice edge. I mounted mine to a simple barn door style hinge and that was cured. Prices on some, like Northern lights, are just plain crazy in my book.
September 4, 2020 at 10:43 am #1970585I tried out those Ultimate rattle reels I mentioned a friend gave me and they fit in the mounts on the wall so I may buy a couple more of those. My concern is they are not nearly as loud as what I am used to but man are they smooth.
September 4, 2020 at 11:13 am #1970594Wow $40 each! I think most here would agree you don’t need to spend that much but they do look nice. Rattle reels don’t take much abuse.

My dad has the early Northern Lights reels in his house, and complains constantly about a few design issues as well. Not worth the money IMO, but they do look cool lit up and there’s no question as to which reel went off in the middle of the night.
September 6, 2020 at 8:16 am #1970849John, I’m extremely happy with my Lindells, but have may friends just as happy with their Catch Cover reels. All the reels with the steel support and plastic line style reels (No Lgts too)Are so smooth that a quick tug from a fish will peel of line and tangle up line. They take some tinkering, don’t let that discourage you from them, they adjust. The wood ones aren’t quite as bad at that. Again, you can spend $40 or you can spend $10, they’re all VERY similar. Get what you like.
